Scope power

I need a scope for my brand new Marlin 917vr for target shooting only, how much power is best for this, I'm interested in a Mueller APT 4.5-14X40 (not APV) with mil dot reticle and 80 moa of elevation and a Mueller 8-32X44 with target dot reticle with 40 moa of elevation, I don't know if 40 moa is enough for a 17 hmr, I have pratically no experience with scopes.

I do not know the scopes but 40 moa is plenty for 17 hmr at any reasonable distance. You need to look through the 8-32 before you buy it. Some of those scopes with a very large zoom range can be pretty dark.

I don't have access to the scope it's a Mueller 8-32X44 and only available by mail here in Canada. This scope has moa total so only 20 moa up.

buying without trying?????

I would NEVER buy a scope that I could not look through personally, or at least look through a demo of that same scope.

Don't know what kind of "target shooting" you are talking about but assume you just mean firing at standard 50 and 100 yard rimfire targets. Any scope from 15x to 35x would be fine. You don't need lighted reticules or mil dot reticules. Standard crosshair if fine. MOA adjustment is of no importance, all scopes will have enough for a .17 HMR up to it's useful range. No need to go over 40MM objective. Your problem will be mounting the scope low and in a position to give you proper eye relief for what ever position you intend to shoot the rifle. You also need to mount the scope where you can get good cheek contact. It's important to mount the scope, or have it adjustable, for whatever position you use be it standing, off a bench, or prone.

i have 2 8.5x25x44mm mueller tactical scopes. thier pretty darned clear for what they are.

I acquired that exact scope after it received so many positive reviews on RFC. It is bright, clear all the way to 32X. The side focus works well, and the cross hairs are fine and good for target work. It passed my box test with positive clicks of the oversize target knobs. I consider it a good value. Remember it is a 30mm tube so get the correct rings. You might consider the Burris Signature so that you can use 20moa inserts if you are trying to play at longer range.
