Scope Power Bump

Would anyone know what the process would be for increasing the power on a Leupold 36XBR to 40X? Is the procedure done from the eyepiece of the scope and did Leupold ever honor their warranty on scopes that had the modification?
Thanks,

For a period of time Leupold honored their warranty on scopes modified by Dick Thomas as he did a lot of work for them. They have since publicly announced they may elect to not work on scopes modified by anybody. I have heard varying reports on them working or not working on modified scopes in general these days. And yes his boosts to 40x were noticeable externally in that the eyepiece was backed off a considerable amount and usually by a sticker he put on it.

buls eye pro add on scope boosters work well for most people, but not all...call them and ask.
a 3x will give you aprox 30% increase so 36x goes to about 46x

Have a Siebert bumped scope. It's dimmer. DTO, the BullsEye Pro. FWIW.

The reason I was asking is I have one that is supposed to be bumped and the eye piece screws all the way off. Is that normal? The eye piece does have to backed out pretty far to focus the reticle.Leupold said they would not honor any repairs if it had been bumped. FWIW

they only honored work from premier and that has since gone away.

Go with the Bulls-Eye. If you don't like it, you can take if off, and your scope is still in warrenty. Of course, that's if you have a standard 36X scope. The one you have, might be bad, and that's why it was for sale. IMHO.

Nothing wrong with it and it has always functioned flawlessly.I have had it for about 7 years.I was just curious about the eye piece.

Send that scope to Wally Siebert if you have any problems in the future.

I was just curious about the eye piece.

I believe being that far back on the threads is necessary for the small boost from 36 to 40x, I personally owned a 36x bumped to 60x and several 6.5-20x scopes bumped to 18-40 by Dick Thomas. Those involved an actual extension of an inch or so added to rear of scope. The 36x bumped to 40x, two of which I sold for a friend I noticed had the eyepiece way back with an awful lot of threads showing.

So Dick, is it normal for the eye piece to be totally unscrewed off the tube on these bumped scopes?

Of course it is not normal for it to be unscrewed off the tube how, pray tell would that be able to work? But I will elaborate on what I said, I sold two 36 Leupold that had been converted to 40x by Dick Thomas for a friend who is a very good shooter, he earned HOF points with these scopes and I was very surprised how far back the eyepieces had been screwed, a whole lot of threads were showing.

Dick, I think you misunderstood what I was asking. Lets put it this way. Were you able to unscrew the eyepieces completely off the 2 scopes you had. I can on mine. I did it out of curosity just to see if it would stop towards the end but it continued until it came off.Is one supposed to be able to unscrew the eyepiece on the modified scope. Was the Stop deleted in order to make the mod?

Never had any interest in trying to possibly damage my scope by opening them up. I did have a friend who opened one up once to clean out a spot of dust and wiped his reticle right out , that was good enough for me to never try it.

Mr.Siebert said its normal for the eyepiece to completely unsrcew after the modification is done to the scope in case anyone was wondering.

On the first three models of the Leupold 36X, the stop was just that a screw on stop to prevent the eyepiece from screwing all the way off. If it was there or not it didn't make any difference, unless you did manage to unscrew it all the way off. The BR-D series scopes has an o-ring on top of the stop that looks like it helps support the rear of the eyepiece and maybe prevent movement. I'd want the stop on a BR-D, but not necessarily any of the eariler models of Leupold 36's. I'm definitely not a scope expert like Wally, but probably know just enough to get me in trouble.
