scope mounting question.

i've noticed that for a few years now calfee has been mounting his scopes with a set of rings on the front only. i remember the article about why he was mounting them this way.

my question (and wally you can run this by him if you want) why has nobody tried it on hall actioned rifles and moved the scope closer to the rear of the dovetail grooves to avoid as much shooter contact(cheek contacting the stock and so on). the same could be done using the rear scope base holes in a turbo action(i am just guessing they have them in the rear). has anybody tried this?

Even though BR rifles enjoy a level of care in handling unmatched by anything else on the planet, I always had the fear that it would be too easy to bend a scope tube with that set up.

It does look a bit unorthodox. But as long as one does not use the scope as a handle or lever why would it hurt?

I have one so mounted on a rimfire rifle that has been sleeved and is not drilled for scope mounts. I had my smith make up a scope mount block (Davidson style) that seats in the rear barrel scope mount holes and is cantilevered over the receiver front to just ahead of the loading port. I have mounted a big/heavy Nightforce BR scope on this rail without difficulty nor change of poi using doubled Kelbly rings. If you bump the front bell you would think it unstable. But it does not change poi so I'm happy. bob finger
