Ran out of lapping compound that came with the kit. Going to auto parts store to get valve lapping compound tomorrow. What grit do I ask for?
Thanks

I use 240grit.

Around here "finest you can get" could be clear down to 1500! 600grit Clover is commonly available.

IMO you want something that will remove metal quickly and cleanly and anything finer than 240 cuts really slow.

If you use a 1 inch bar and lapping compound, you will get a larger than
1 inch ring. many scopes are actuall .998 or .999. but I have seen them down to .995. The coarser the grit, the larger the hole.

I use 120 grit and it seems to work well. My 1 inch lap is about .997.

If you used that lapping bar enough to use up an once of lapping compound, you best measure your bar. My bet is it's wore down to less than .990 in the contact area. With a tapper to the ends and middle.

Our local store only has two types of valve lapping compound. One is slightly finer than the other but neither is marked as to grit size. This is NAPA brand.

My Napa store had one water based and one greased based lapping compound, both 150 grit. Grit was not listed on cans, had to look it up in their catalog. Bought the grease based on to try.
Checked my 1 in and 30mm lapping bars, both were slightly undersized and still straight as best as I could measure.
