Scope Installation

I am in process of installing a scope and same rings on a second rifle. I lapped the rings some the first time and thought they were okay but didn't know for sure. I have since got a new scope ring alignment tool and found on this second installation the rings don't line up. I lapped some more and now find out the rings don't clamp on the scope enough to give a good fit. My thoughts are to shim the bottom or the top ring with some shim stock or some cut aluminum can shims. Any ideas on this will be appreciated.:rolleyes: Mickey

buy some burris signature zee rings and dont lap or anything else

Thanks for suggestion nipper but I already have $100 rings, might have weight problem with the Burris, and have not seen any 30mm rings that will fit Davidison bases.;);) Mickey

lapped out rings

mix up some JB weld, lay it in the bottom half of the rings. put some release agent on the scope, like wax. then lay the scope in and clean up what come out. you dont want to push all of the JB out.

Mickey, Alan Hall makes some very light weight rings for Davidson bases for 30mm scopes.....

Thanks for suggestions but I already have rings. I was asking about the use of shims.:( Mickey

The shims or a piece of a can will do what you want it to, but the JB weld will actually "bed" the scope in the oversized rings. If the rings are oversized enough the JB will bed the scope in perfect alignment. It only takes a small amount of the epoxy in the bottom rings and be sure to use a release agent on the scope.

Thanks for help Jody. I am concerned about getting too much JB weld in the front or rear ring and getting the scope uneven. Might be worse than it was off center before.:(:) Mickey

Have a little milled off the rings, so there is a small gap when they are tight.

I know you are just trying to save the rings that you have, but my rifle has 30mm Kelbly rings on Davidson bases. I have a Leupold 36X BRD in it that is 1" tube but it has custom delrin shims or liners that adapt the 1" tube to 30mm rings. I can't see why any delrin shims couldn't be made for even 30mm rings that are lapped to large. Maybe lap them to 40mm and add delrin spacers to fill the void? I hope this helps.

Go to a hobby shop and get a piece of aluminum sheet which will come in various thickness', just use same for both rings and you got about a $4 fix.

shim

Mickey,
You might cut a piece of emory cloth and glue in the bottom. Then the rough side will hold the scope. but then again it might be to thick.

Thanks to everyone who helped with my problem. I finally got it lapped pretty good. I put shim stock on the upper side of lower ring and on the lower side of upper ring. It took a while to do it. There was quite a bit of lapping. If I don't like the way it is I will get some Weaver bases and put the Burris Signature Zee rings on it.;) Mickey

Using Shims

Wilbur you are probably right. But it was the only thing I could come up with to use rings and not throw the $100 set away. The rings had to be lapped so much to line them up that they bottomed out and wouldn't clamp good enough on the scope. I am open for suggestions. I will try and see what happens this afternoon. Like I said if I am not satisfied I will break down and get some more. I have already got another set of different kind of rings. They were so bad off line that I didn't even want to try to lap them.:(:( Mickey

Maybe it is not the rings but the bases or prehaps drill and tapped out of line and there have been occasions where the mounting dove tail was not inline with the barrel, then again it could be barrel reciever alignment. Any combination of the above. It is not always the rings, I have an xp action that is tapped more than 1.5 ft off at 100 yards, rings line up perfectly just not where the barrel is. Even the burris z's can't correct that much.

One and a half ft is 18 moa more or less...Z ring inserts will go 30 moa.

Mickey,

I don't have any idea what your rings look like. Do you have enough meat on the upper half where they clamp together to mill some off? If you can take some off, it should reduce the diameter. This is assuming the bottom half is threaded for the screws. Depending on how deep the threads are, you may even be able to steal a little there to. Now your screws will probably be to long.

Using shims

I believe it is the rings that are bad. I shot this rifle all last year with the same Davidison bases that are on it now. I was using a Leupold 36X scope and Jewell rings and didn't seem to have any trouble. I am puting on a 45X competition scope with 30mm Kelby rings. I am going to check it out today if weather will hold up. We have been having a bunch of rain and bad weather down here. Are there any 30mm Burris zee rings that will fit Davidison bases or will I have to get Weaver bases to put the Burris rings on? Thanks for help.:eek::(:( Mickey

Only for Weaver Style

Mickey;
They only have the 30mm for Weaver bases. Take the Davidson bases off and install some Weaver bases along with the Burris 30MM Rings. Get the complete set of inserts so you can fine tune.
