Scope Height

Not all that critical but most prefer that the scope be as low as possible, as long as it is comfortable. Some have even looked at off-set rings to really make it easy. The only issue is that some scope rails and rings are not compatible. Also, higher quality rings are not cheap.

Jamdon,

I do not think shooting at known distances the scope height is important. For unknown distances like Field Target. I have heard lower is better for some reason. I really do not know why. I posted that the lower the scope the more distance in the point blank area 17.4 to 40.5 yards for my .177 shooting 905 fps, with a scope height of 1.75 inches. I was wrong at least according to the chair gun program. It shows that a height of 2.0 inches would increase the point blank area to 18.6 to 43 yards. Point blank is the yardage where one could hold center of mass and expect to hit a .5 inch circle without holdover or under. Not a hunter, but a rabbit in that point blank with a center of the head shot is a dead wabbit.

Thanks for the responses.

BobZ in FT it is actually recommended that the scope height be approximately 2 1/2" above the bore, this allows all adjustment needed for the 10-55yrd trajectory in one full revolution (60 clicks, or 15 MOA).....the explanation goes a bit deeper but this is the general reasoning.

Coming from the FT end of air rifle shooting I would like to set up my scope right the first time.

Jamdon,

Glad to see some FT guys coming in. I get one revolution with my 1.75 that is center to center, with all my Tasco and the Nikko Stirling 1/8 or 1/4 clicks, even with my old Leopold Premire Reticle 35 power. I get it even with my 12 ft lb. gun. I shoot mostly Hunter or International since the early 90's. My NJR is all grown up at 21 years old. I zero at the peak of my trajectory. That old timer served me well at the 1995 BR-50 Nationals with a center to center 1.75 scope height. That height is just the standard sports match mounts. The Niko-Stirling takes an extra high mount or risers for the NJR. I use an old Tasco Tactical 40 power mil dot. Pretty sure I have time in grade over most shooters in both air rifle games.
