scope choices

I couple of weeks ago I asked for help on info on a front rest for light gun and received some good brands to look at!! I now need to ask for your opinions on a good 30mm. tube scope for 1000 yd. Nightforce, leupold, sightron, and etc. Being that mirage is problematic at high magnification, does a variable help that much? Say a 12 to 42x? Can you use a 36x leupold with a davis booster and get the 50x to work? Much cheaper than a nightforce...?! Say you also drill and install nylon screws to lock the reticles? I'm looking for something that is as foolproof as possible...and do everything thats needed!! I'm shooting a 7wsm, have any of you noticed a shift in your zero with any of the big cartridges? If so, what did you do to correct for this? Thanks again beforehand!

I suggest to go with a Nightforce or better. They will take the abuse of a lot heavier hitting then a 7WSM, and keep on ticking!!!!

Variables are by far more popular to the LR realms.

Suggestion for you. Go to the varies website for the 600/1000 ranges and read the results and look at the "equipment lists". Then surf those sites for pictures, for a picture is worth a 1000 words right !!!
It is real obvious what gets used the most all over the country for many of the aspects you are inquiring about, and you can see it first hand by checking out the results.

I've got a Davis 3X booster and it doesn't work at all on my 6.5X24, BR36-D or Leupold 45 BR scopes.

I bought it counting on it to boost a 36 up to the 45 or 50 that everyone raved about and it's completely useless to me because I can't get the reticle to clear up no matter what.

This surprises me since I'd read nothing but good.

My advice is to buy one of the ones you mentioned that fits your budget.

I have alway's shot Weaver's T-36. I have 2 Weaver's on my 6.5 x 284 rifles and a sightron 36 power on my 300WSM. The weavers have always been clear for me. The sightron, even on the best day is not as clear. The question is, how much money do you have or want to spend? I got the optic boosters on my scopes and see my 6.5 holes at 600yds. I ran into the problem with optic lens and could not see my cross hair's at all. I played with the rear bell of the scope and turned it all the way in. Now i see my cross hairs just fine and the scope is still clear. Even on the worst days for mirage, i put the optic lens on and i have done fine. Check out the scope before you buy it. I have seen some hazy Weaver,Sightron, Leopold and Nightforce scope's. Does this mean that they are all bad? No. There are certain scopes that the optic lens will not work on. If that is the case, than send the lens back to Mr. Davis and I'm sure he will refund your money.

Have you talked to Mr Davis? I too am having trouble getting the crosshairs to come in. I tried it on an NSX and a LRT Leupold. I called Mr. Davis and explained the trouble. He is sending me a 3X to try (I had the 4x). No credit card #....nothing. Very, Very nice man to do buisness with, and he will take both of them back if I am not satisfied!!!! Money back. You can't beat that kind of service!!:):)

Yeahh Tod, I called Gene. He offered to make it right, even to the tune of doing a custom grind if need be but the problem is that to make it work the power will have to be dropped. I BOUGHT the thing to boost my power as advertised, not to give it a little bump up. I'm too tight right now to replace my 45X and I wanted 60-power for 600yds.

And YES I'm spoiled :)

I expected that Gene would make it right when I called. I've been around these gun guys for 30yrs ......... I've had stuff sent to me with a handwritten letter or a bill........I've had stuff sent to me that I forgot to pay for because they stuck the invoice on the box cover. You wanna' feel really stupid??? Answer the phone to find Cheryl Hood asking in her sweety-pie voice "I hope y'all are enjoying the (scope checker, folding gun cleaning cradle, pocket group measuring cards) were you just borrowing them?":eek::eek: I mailed that check at midnite.

Nawww, my problem is that I'm just miffed that none of our gunwriters nor folks on this board who've owned the things have ever mentioned this issue......... "They go clear up to 4X but of course you can't USE 3X or 4X if you've got good eyes!"

I ordered right from Gene, I wish HE'D a let me know.

I just hate sending stuff back for a money-back guarantee because nobody wins except the postal service and Gene's a great guy. I'm gonna' keep trying to find a scope it'll work on

Thanks again for the advice!!

As expected I got some darn good advice again!! Just got home from work and read the posts...Here right on the mississippi we're getting hammered with torrential rain and its really coming down now! Had to make a detour or two..But I made it home! I will take the advice and go to the different sites to gain some incite...I really appreciate the response and enjoy all of the info gained from this site. Please keep up the good work, helping us guys out! Thanks...

Al,

I have one of these boosters, and in my experience it does four things:
1. Magnifies the image 30%
2. Noticeably reduces the eye relief
3. Magnifies the reticle size by 30%
4. Drastically changes the reticle focus, that is, in relation to the eyepiece position.
If you normally have your eyepiece screwed well out to focus the reticle, as I do, then it requires the eyepiece to be screwed well forward. And by this, I mean just about ALL the way in!

I'd be very interested to hear if trying this solves your problem with it.

Regards,
Lee

Lee,

I've bottomed out the eyepiece on 4 different scopes. A 45X Leupold, a 36 and two 6.5X20's. It ALMOST comes clear.

I'm tempted to take off the bell, remove the lockring and screw it clear down BUT............ Since't I've never done this I'm more than a little hesitant :)

I shoot with my scopes very nearly bottomed out as is, 3/16" maybe?

I've also removed the lens from the rubber each time (I ordered the rubber mounted one) and held it directly against the back of the scope. And reversed the curvature. Gene mentioned that the screw in ones are closer and more forgiving, maybe I'll have to try one.

BTW, for all the "sensitive folks" I'm not bashing Gene's booster.............it works for lots of people. And I WANT ONE :) it's just that this info board goes the extra mile and I've never seen this "problem" mentioned.

So I mentioned it.
