Savage Model 40

Any body out there familiar with the Savage model 40? I need to know how the barrel is attached to the receiver. It appears that the barrel is into the receiver by about 4 1/2 inches, and I'm hoping it is not a press fit because the owner would like me to run a reamer into the 22 Hornet chamber to make it a "K" Hornet.
If it is a press fit, I'm going to need a source that can supply me with a range rod so I can zero in the chamber.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich Q.

On the model 40 the front recoil lug has an allen screw in it. If you remove the screw you will be able to tap the lug out of the way which will reveal a dovetail notch in the bottom of the barrel. Once the lug is removed you will be able to unscrew the barrel.

Now that will be one heck of an action to rebarrel. Not only are looking for correct headspace, but you need a dovetail to also line up? I'd thread it to headspace, and then cut the dovetail with the barrel in the action.........
.........I never worked on one but I'd be surprised a simple rifle like this with an extremely long receiver shank would be threaded. How long is the thread?

Now that is an interesting way to barrel an action. Rebarreling could be quite an exercise! Thanks for the reply. Rich
