Savage model 12 LRPV

I am looking for someone who has a savage model 12 LRPV in a 22-250, and reloads. Sadly, I am new to reloading, and need all the help I can get. Specifically, I was wanting recomendations on bullets with weights, powder, charges and brass. I'm not sure if my twist is 1-9" or 1-12", but I think it is the latter. I plan on praire doggin if that helps. Also, I plan on getting a leupold vx-l 6.5x20 with the varmint reticle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

note to someone new to the board. You may have better luck with the factory/hybrid forum. Most, if not all talk on centerfire benchrest is delegated to that of benchrest competition and its circle.

best bet is first find the twist rate your rifle has you can do this with a rod, a Jag, a patch, and a ruler.

once you find the twist, then chose the bullet weight that fits that twist best.

from there you have to find the load data for that bullet weight.

This part of the board is for "centerfire benchrest" (registered tornement stuff), not to be confused with "shooting a centerfire rifle off a bench".

The .22-250 is an amazingly popular round, but it really isn't the topic here, you would be best served at the Factory / Hybrid section of this site, those guys do more with the .22-250 than we do here.

No problem. Its just that a lot of these guys on this forum don't hunt and don't even own a hunting rifle. They would not have the foggiest idea about loads for a 22-250. If you are new to reloading I would suggest you get a good relaoding manual or two and read all you can about reloading. It is a safe hobby but done wrong you can get hurt really bad. I have one in the 1-12 twist

Reloader 15 with a 55 gr nosler, berger or vmax touching the lands works very well for me. I am using remington brass. I have used this load in 3 of these and it has worked in them all.

Start at 35grs and work up.

Also have seen H380 and IMR4895 work well.

I echo the safety concerns above, plus a mentor is invaluable.

You gun is more than likely a 1 in 12 the 1 in 9 twist was an option starting in 2007.
But you need to know your twist rate. I believe all 1 in 9 guns had the target 6 oz accu-trigger, and the reciever is marked as such, with a red flag sear release in the trigger.

The 1 in 12 I have had great luck with 4895 with a 52 gr or 53 gr bullet, with cci br4 primers. I have found the throats are very long in the guns and getting close to the lans is hard to do with a 52 gr bullet. The 1 in 9 guns will handel the heavier bullets, and will also shoot the lighter bullets.

No garentee on accuracy but I have had many factory savages that shoot 5 shot groups in the mid to hig .3 area a 100 yards. Your gun should be able to do that.

The worse part about the LRPV is the coating on the stock, it dont ride bags well, some have sanded the coating off, some have used teflon tape and others just deal with it and use alot of baby powder.
