Savage Md 12

Yes, it can. At the risk of being told I'm nuts (which wouldn't be the first time) if I was going to build a 100/200 BR rifle using a factory action as the starting point, I'd choose a Savage target action like the right bolt left port single shot LRPV action. I think with the heavy receiver sections, small port, absence of a magazine well, and the floating bolt head it's a better design than the Remington for that application. Machine the barrel with a tenon, throw away the barrel nut, and have at it.

I do it myself, so I don't pay the $550.00.

For my shooting (but probably not serious BR competition) the Savage target trigger at 6oz is good enough. So it would cost under $1,100 (less on stock). For the money, it's a darn good rifle - not a serious BR competition rifle unless one got lucky, but better than most, and a wonderful long range varmint rifle. My Savage LRPV .22-250, box stock, out scored a bunch of pretty expensive custom made rifles in the first two ground hog matches I entered with it, shooting at 200, 300, and 500 yards - won the factory class the first two times I entered so easily I got bored - haven't been back - more fun to shoot real ground hogs.

If a guy/gal was willing to use a pre-chambered Shilen Match barrel, screw the barrel on themselves, and do their own bedding, it would only cost about $50.00 more than it costs me.

Not the very top of the heap, true enough, but an excellent first rifle.

I still think the single shot Savage target action with a bit of easy to do truing is a better action for the money than a Remington.

Would the Md 12 LRPV in 6 NORMA BR work in Factory Class? Who would be the best Gunsmith working Savage Model 12's? Where would I go to see 100/200 BR class shooting in Kansas?

I picked something up out of your post that really rung a bell with me! We are pricing ourselves out of existence! Not everybody that'd just love to punch paper can afford a $5,000 first class rig (not counting all the neat little things you gotta have to make it shoot). We have HBR, but the rules committee have virtual run ten people off for everyone they attract. This is sad, because there are a lot of folks out there that want to join in the fun. Then there's the factory benchrest game, and I already see it moving in an upwards direction, but the concept is still far better (in my own view) than HBR. HBR needs to allow single shot actions that are massed produced! Perhaps they might relax the case capacity rule by about 25%, but spec the case head size(s). In otherwords no PPC unless it's a factory chambered barrel (Rugers gotta have fun too). Nothing would be better than to see a long waiting line in HBR and factory BR. These folks will eventually move up to bigger and better things (and many of you will make money off them).
