Savage F/TR for F-Class/Benchrest competition

Hi all, newbie here from Australia.

I am wondering if anyone uses a Savage F/TR .308 for F-Class and/or benchrest competition. I am looking at buying one, putting a Nightforce NXS 8-32x56 scope on it and using it for some comps here in Oz. I have heard some really good reports about these, but I would like to hear from anyone who actually uses one for competition.

I believe Darrel Buell won the the 2011 Irish Open F-T/R with a Savage F-T/R. I haven't seen many Savages on the equipment lists with benchrest results. - nhk

you won't see many Savage rifles used in benchrest competetion, but you will see a lot of them the factory classes. There also seems to be a growing amount in 1000 yard shooting these days. Quite a few local clubs have pretty much banned their single shot bolt guns as well as their left port/right bolt guns; claiming they are not true production rifles. B.S.! On the otherhand I can buy a new Panda action (or whatever) and end up being ahead of the game from the get go for pure bench rest shooting at the shorter ranges

It's too bad they've banned the Savage LRP actions from production class, because the tolerances aren't any better, but it is a rigid action. I have two of them and the bolt faces required turning and I cleaned up the receiver ring. Other than a lighter pull the trigger is definitely production. Do you know anyone who makes a stock for the LRP action? Everything I've seen with the 4.4" spacing has a blind magazine cavity. The action is threaded 1.125"X20T and all the after market chambered drop in barrels seem to be 1.0625"X20T. - nhk

Sharpshooter sells both thread sized barrels, and suspect Pacnor and others do as well. I think McMillen makes a stock, but not positive. Reason for banning them is simply politics, and keeping somebody else happy. It's time for a completely new set of rules for HBR that has no buddy system

Thanks for the info. I got B&C Varmint/Tactical stocks and will have to install a center pillar and fill the cavity. I did buy barrels and reamers (and a lathe) so I'll be doing my own. That's one of those deals where I spent $15K to do something I could have had done for $1.5K. (Maybe that's why high school was the best five years of my life.) I do want more barrels that I don't have reamers for. - nhk

I bought one in the model 12 dual port benchrest in .308. I use it in factory class benchrest shoots at 100-600 and and F-T/R. Very happy with it.

I would have it rechambered and crowned before shooting it.

Silly me... I think I'd shoot it first before doing things that may or may not need done. Some do, no doubt. But I've seen more that may look questionable in theory but still shot more than fine in practice.

Then again, what do I know? It's not like I've ever used the dang things in competition...

The .223 shot decent until it wore out. The .308 would only shoot with the cases FL sized, and bullet jammed. No Neck Sizing, or fiddling with jump would shoot at all. With a precision cut chamber, I'm sure it would have been much more forgiving to the loads it shot.

have not bought a Remington lately?

Unfortunately Yes. A M700 BDL .270 that makes me kick myself for not bringing my borescope to the store. The chamber isn't sloppy, it's crooked. Half of the rifling is missing from the first half inch of the throat. :(

I have a .223VS that came from the factory with the chamber roughly .007" off from the centerline of the bore, but it was also at an angle of about seven degrees! It was a good solid 4.25" gun at 100 yards!! Barrel was so rough that it actually tore up patches when pushed thru the bore. About 30 years ago I had a 700 ADL in .270 that would shoot half inch groups right outta the box, but I had to have something better! NOT!!

Yeah that! I'm very happy w/ mine. The trigger is 8 oz from the factory.
