Savage Caliber Change?

Hello Folks. Hopefully one of you gentlemen can help me with a quick question. I have a savage F-Class rifle chambered in the 6.5x.284 norma. Is it possible for me to change the caliber to say .308 or maybe 6normaBR? If so is it a big deal, maybe create reliability problems. I'm hoping some will say yeah just buy the Savage .308 bolt and twist on a new barrel. Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys. Savage does make this model in the 6mm Norma BR but I'd rather have the .308.

Fred Moreo, the US "Savage Guru" can help. Here's his site: http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/. :)

No need to get in the 6 month + line at Sharp Shooter when you can do it yourself. Yeah, Fred's good but the wait will drive a nun to drink. . .

Ah that advice and candor is very much appreciated.

A number of barrel makers make prefit barrels for the Savage system. Two I know of.....Shilen and PacNor. Top line barrel makers both. And if you need a different chamber they just might have a reamer to get you where you want to go. Maybe there are others but these are the two I am familiar with. Just screw the barrel on to a head space gage and snug up the barrel nut. Done. That and the floating bolt head are some of the reasons the Savage is one of the most accurate out of the box rifle aound.

Sorry dumb question. I would then need a bolt to match the caliber I want to use? Or just extractor work? This is a single shot F-Class.

For a single shot rifle, the only match needed is the diameter of the case head. All the cases you mentioned share the same case head diameter.

Apart from esoteric cartridges based on obscure foreign brass like the PPC family, rimless case heads are generally of three sizes that you might describe for convenience as:
  • .223
  • .308
  • belted magnum
Check out head dimensions next time you peruse the drawings in the loading manual of your choice.

That advertisement started out as a picture of my gun last night from the savage website. This morning it had changed to that savage banner. I don't know why but I'm not advertising. If I was going to advertise anything it would be http://www.advancepaintingnc.com/
