Savage Bolt Head

A friend of mine has a plain jane 110E in .243
Can the bolt head and barrel be changed to convert it to a .222 Rem?
If so, where is the best place to buy a barrel and bolt head?
Will the .243 feed rails work?
Thanks

I doubt the feed rails will work with the much smaller 222 case diameter, but I'd suggest you call Brownells and talk to one of their techs to get the rest of the parts needed for this conversion.

Sure, he can get whatever he needs for a Savage conversion. I'd suggest Kevin Rayhill (Stockade Varmint Rifles & Stocks) 308-432-5114 for the bolt head and maybe the barrel. But then you can get pre chambered barrels from several barrel makers, Shilen, Pac-Npr and Lothar Walther to name a few. As for the magazine, I'd think you could get one from Brownells, but if you call Kevin, he probably has a boxful somewhere. BTW- the boltface swap takes about 5 minutes. The barrel, maybe 10.

The feed rails on a Savage are a function of the sheet metal lips on the magazine box, not the receiver itself (at least on the ones I've messed with).

You should be able to order a new magazine box with an appropriately sized follower from Sharp Shooter Supply, as well as Brownell's or other suppliers. I normally go with SSS for this sort of thing, because Savage is *all* they do, so there's less chance of getting confused about which part for what generation, etc. and so forth.

This might help with the details of the bolt...

YMMV,

The long action .378 bolt heads are no longer made by Savage so you will have to try and locate one. Fred at SSS does adapt the short action bolt head to the long action but it might be more cost effective to sell the 06 and buy a 223 rifle ready to go.

The 223 mag box will require a piece be attached to the rear to adapt it to the 06 length cutout. You also have to grind the rails of the action to fit the 223 mag box.
