Savage actions

Thinking about one for a live varmint rig, single shot. Are they worth it or should I just stick with my 700's converted to single shots.

I am building my first rifle and bought the Savage duel port target action for 6mm Norma BR. I also bought a Brux barrel blank which needs to be chambered, threaded and crowned. Still haven't gotten a stock yet. So far I have $815 including tax and shipping. My gunsmith will finish the barrel for $150. I plan on assembling it myself. The stock will determine the final cost. I will glass bed the action since I have done it many times before.

I am very pleased with the quality of the action which was manufactured in February 2009. I also see that the firing pin is very small in diameter and the hole it goes through is very small also. Must be better for small rifle primers. The action lug is not punched it is milled so it is very uniform in thickness.

Here is a picture of one.

Both solid platforms.

Are they worth it.....?.... Oh yea..!

Lottsa options with the Savage Model 110 action and its descendants.

Rem or Sav.... These two platforms provide the basis for accuracy.

Attached of my Sav 12 totally factory (no metal work & factory trigger) except the Shilen 6BR barrel.
Got all 5 shots in the .221 in a right to left steady condition. Bottom group was mostly a head wind, 4th shot out bot left from a pickup I missed.
Good thing, you can see the wind in both groups >>.... Accuracy.:)
Easily a =<.5 MOA rifle.

Good luck on your choise,
cale

Caroby:

I am building a Savage LRPV in 30 BR. The Shilen barrel will be here in August. The stock is SSS dog Tracker ($300.00). I hope it turns out well.

Jeff,

You will SEE the wind with that 30BR and will make you a better shooter... Won't beat the win.......... Nothing does. It's just real HONEST.
You will learn MUCH... $$$ with more builds I see in your future...;)

Savage...totally worth it.

Owning both Remington's and Savages, I'd build another Savage because of the ability to buy pre-threaded/chambered barrels (Pac-Nor, Shilen, Walther to name a few) and install them myself. Should you decide you want a completely different caliber in the future, being able to swap bolt heads/faces for different case head diameters is a bonus too.

If I were right handed, I'd have a varmint/bench gun built on one of those right bolt/left port target actions in a heartbeat. Can't get that configuration in a Remington. I'm hoping Savage remembers us lefty's and comes out with a left bolt/right port target action soon.

Yes! I have both and the Savage action, properly tuned and timed, is a nice action. Mine is used for live varmint shooting with switch barrels ranging from Douglas, Pac Nor, Kreiger and Hart. Some are set up using the barrel nut and some are shouldered and indexed like the Remington. Both methods have given excellent results.

David,
I suggest Fred Moreo of Sharpshooter Supply in Ohio. I know there are others out there but I had Fred build a Savage single shot varmint rig several years ago and have been very happy with the quality of his work and knowledge around Savage actions. He was way ahead of the pack years ago and has only gotten better.

Savages vs others

I true, time and upgrad about 100 Savages per year. If you had asked me about Savages 10 years ago I would have puked. I was a Remington man for the soul of my feet to the top of my head. In my opinion there has been a steady decline in the Rewmington quality and a steady improvement in the savage lines. If one it to compare one must compare apples to apples. Savage is not on the level of a custom action but on the level of a factory action they can hold their own an in many cases can perform superiorly. I have had several Savages that after being worked on and had aftermarket barrels and triggers put on them that shot single digit groups. Just with any high performance item it requires constant tuning and adjusting. Savages can compete verry well in the BR factory class, F-Class, Palma, and Cross the course guns. Savage can handle any competition that a rifle can be competitive shooting a ten shot group sub .5 or better. I have a long range high master shooter who shot a 197 ag last year shooting three model 10 Savages chambered in 6mmBRX.

Currently I am building a personal Switch barrel FClass rig. It has a Savage RBLP Target action, wearing a 32' Broughton 1:8, 5C, 6mm barrel tapered from 1.250 to .898. The second barrel is a 32" Broughton 1:12, 5C, 30 caliber with the same taper chambered in 308 with a 95 Palma chamber (with the throat opened up about .035". The bolt bod has been replaced with a PT&G .701 fluted bolt body. The lugs have been lapped. The trigger has been set down to about 8 oz. I will shoot the 6mmBRX with fire formed 6mmBR Lapua brass, 32.5 grains of Varget with Berger 105s or Sierra 107s and Wolf magnum small rifle primers.

The 308 will be shot with Lapua match brass, 180 Berger VLDs with 46.5 grains of Varget. Both loads will easily shoot sub .450 ten shot groups at 100 yards. They also will shoot well to 1000 yards.

Don't let anyone tell you a Savage is not competitive.
