I have been having trouble with my savage 308 misfireing. The gun smith that looked at the gun for me set the accutrigger a little heavyier and said that the gun was clean and in good condition. I fired the gun 9 times without a misfire and when I fired it the next day it misfired twice. The only thing that I might have done wrong was to pull the trigger from the side and maybe the accutrigger was not completely depressed, but this problem started when the gun misfired three times before I was able to shoot a deer and I am worried that I will have this problem when a big deer comes along. I have heard of other people having problems with misfireing with savage, can anyone advise me what I should do.

When you say misfire, which of the following happens.
1, you pull the trigger and hear a click but no bang and the Accu Release lever cannot be moved rearward. Common issue -Trigger spring weight too light, or finger on side of trigger.
2, you pull the trigger and hear a click but no bang and the Accu Release lever can be moved rearward. Common issue- Ammo or firing pin assembly issue.
3, you cannot pull the trigger. Accu Release has caught an accidental discharge before you touched the trigger, likely when closing bolt. Common issue - Trigger spring weight too light.

Check the headspace. With the ammunition that's misfiring iron a layer of masking tape on the casehead, trim it off round with a razor knife and see if it'll close in the rifle.

PLEASE, DO THIS EITHER ON THE RANGE OR WITH THE MUZZLE SAFELY INTO A DIRT BANK!!! WEAR YOUR HEARING PROTECTION ETC....

CAPS off.....

sorry

Try two layers of tape....

three.....

my guess is that it'll take at least three layers before you feel resistance

Misfires

Are you getting a firing pin impression, but no ignition? The suggestions already given are things that should be checked. Also, is your bolt face concave? If the bolt face is concave that increases the distance the firing pin has to travel even if the head space is correct. What is the firing pin protrusion? That needs to be 0.045-0.054". Is there oil or grease inside the bolt? The bolt needs to be clean and dry inside. You have a private message. - nhk

Are you shooting factory ammunition or reloads? - nhk

If you are correct about how you may have pulled the trigger, you may have a stock fit issue that needs to be fixed. A buttstock that is too long for the shooter will make it more difficult to place the index finger on the trigger properly, and pull straight back, also, the excitement of taking a shot at a deer would probably override any adjustment in hand position that might be made in calmer circumstances. How does your rifle fit you?

you say it "missfired three times".....was that one one round or on three rounds ?
again factory or handloaded ammo ?
have you tried shooting the same round, that did not go off, several times ?

primers not seated ???

First things first! When you misfired, was there any imprint on the primer?
