Will a .30 cal 240 gr SMK be stable in a 1:10" twist at .300 WM velocities (~2600-2700 fps)?

The math says yes, and I think I've seen others on here talk about doing it, but I want to be sure. The Sierra Manual says 1:9".

Can anyone who has tried this please comment?

Thanks,

the 240 will stabilize just fine with a 1-10 twist,i am using a 10.5 twist and they are shooting great, but my velocities with the 10.5 twist is at 2800,i was using a 10 twist last year at 2700 and they shot awsome.those are some wind bucking pills. tim in tx

Both Joel Pendergraft & I have used 240 SMKs with 10-twist barrels. Joel using a .30MHV -- bigger than a .300 Win Mag, but me with a .300 SHV -- essentially a .300 Dakota, which is close to a Win Mag.

They were stable.

I don't know if anyone has tried them in a .308 Norma mag, or a .30/338; I'd guess they would be stable. A .30/06 would seem iffy. What does the math say?

The math says air density matters too. They're less likely to be stable at Nome Alaska in the winter than at Flagstaff, Arizona in the summer. You didn't say what conditions you'll be shooting in.
