Sako L461 tenon question

I'm going to rebarrel a L461 action.

I've done the forum search and found that most people use 16 TPI threads successfully and I'll also go with the 16 TPI.

I have a question concerning the clearance between the extractor tip and the breech face.

What should a reasonable clearance be ?

I've measured the action and can turn the tenon to set the clearance as desired.

It seems to me that excess clearance between the extractor tip and the breech face will only leave more of the case web unsupported outside the chamber mouth.

I'd like to minimize the unsupported case web while having adequate clearnce between the extractor tip and breech face.

I've thought about maybe .005" clearance but would appreciate other opinions.

Thanks for any replies.

My opion

.01min. to .015"max clearance between the barrel and the bolt. That's really not that much clearance. Myself, I hope I get my buddies Sako done this weekend. it was a .338 Win. mag. Soon to be a .375 H&H. Wearing a Pac-Nor barrel. 3 groove.

I usually take a bit of the point off the extractor and give 5 thou clearance as a minimum. 10 is fine as a maximum.

Thanks for the replies

I appreciate this information. It appears there will be no problem with .005" to .010" clearance.

Dennis, I'm a bit reluctant to take any off the extractor tip since I don't have a known unaltered one to compare it to. The flat spot on the tip makes me wonder if maybe this has already done.

Thanks again for the help, will post again if anything unusual comes up.

Early long extractor L461. Extractor is approx .095" proud of boltface & .048" proud of front face of nearest lug. If you think that the top of the extractor ain't square & level, you're right!

Thanks for the picture John

The extractor tip I have here has been flattened considerably-----compared to your picture.

I suspect its been shortened and am not willing to risk damaging it by shortening it more.

This appears to be a relatively easy barrel job----hope so.

Thanks again.
