Ed Shulin retired gunsmithing instructor of Trinidad, Colorado passed away last Sunday. He was 73. After he retired from teaching he supplied machined blanks and made stocks. His stock work was absolutely superb.

I met him in 1966 and he was my stock making instructor for two years. Ed was an excellent instructor and a great person.

Eddie (Edward) Shulin was born in Great Neck, New York, on November 5, 1936 to Albin and Ona Shulin. He died at home in Hoehne, Colorado, on May 23, 2010 at the age of 73, after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.

Eddie grew up in Great Neck, New York where he loved exploring the woods near his home, having great adventures and finding mischief with his buddies. He graduated from Great Neck High School 1954, and from Trinidad State Junior College in 1959, with a degree in Gunsmithing. While at TSJC he was an honor student, President of Student Body, chosen as "Typical Trojan," and involved in a number of student organizations... and of course, shared much fun and adventure with the "brotherhood of Gunnies".

After graduation, he worked for three years at Mashburn Arms in Oklahoma City. It was in Oklahoma, at a rattlesnake hunt, that he met his wife Lee. They were married in 1962 and moved to Trinidad in September 1965. Eddie was a much beloved instructor of Gunsmithing at TSJC from 1965 to 1993 where he specialized in stockmaking. In 1994 he retired from teaching and opened Shulin Stock Works, a successful stock duplicating business. He "officially" retired from the business in December 2009 with the intention of pursuing some cross-country traveling and building model railroad panoramas.

As a young man, Eddie loved hunting, spending time with his friends, and debating, (usually over a couple of beers). He was outgoing, fun loving and was known to be the life of a few parties in his time. Eddie enjoyed music and had an extensive collection that featured classical composers. Much to the enjoyment and entertainment of his children, he was an accomplished musician on the harmonica, accordion, and clarinet. An ardent bowler, he participated in two bowling leagues for many years and left behind some serious scores for the records. Bird and wildlife watching were life-long interests,as were airplanes and aircraft history. Reading for knowledge and entertainment was a favorite pastime and ultimately provided him with fodder for many challenging discussions with friends and family.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Ona Shulin and his brother Charlie. His is survived by his wife Lee, and children Jim (Lisa) Shulin of Bedford, Texas; Lynn Shulin of Pueblo, Colorado, and Jan Groves of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his grandchildren: McKenna Shulin and Eric Groves, his beloved Labrador retrievers Kelsey and Dusty and his siblings Jack (Mary Sue) Shulin of Atlanta, Georgia, Arline Burdewick of Dunedin, Florida and Karen Shulin of Sweetwater, Florida.

The memorial service is set for Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11 am at Christ in the Canyons, Cokedale.

In lieu of flowers Ed's family would appreciate donations made in his name to the TSJC Foundation, attention Toni DeAngelis, 600 Prospect Street, Trinidad, Colorado, 81082.

That is truly sad. I met Ed some years ago in the summer stock making class when he stopped by. Most of us in class were using his blanks. I have since had him duplicate stocks for me. I did not know him personally, but would have liked to. He was truly a nice guy to do business with, and was very well liked at the school. He will be missed by many. Thanks for the notice Dennis.
