Is the S&W AR-15 M&P Sporter 5.56 mil-spec? Have there been any credible complaints with this firearm?

I currently have 2 of the M&P 15's they are a commercial version, and the 5.56 chamber will handle all military grade 5.56 ammo as well as .223. I had about 6 other AR's most of them Colt H Bar match rifles and I regard my M&P much smoother operating than the colts. I have the PSX which is a gas piston gun, not a gas impingement gun, so that is propbably why it is such a smooth operating rifle. the second one I own is in 5.45X39 and I have never had a single moments trouble with either one of them.

generic answer about ar15's...the commercial semi auto version of the mil m16...a1/a2/a3/a4......

essentially no "manufacturer" make an ar.
they all ASSEMBLE COMPONENTS THEY BUY FROM SUB CONTRACTORS.
THIS APPLIES TO ALL.......( ONE COMPANY IN UTAH ACTUALLY GETS CLOSE)
bbls, buttstocks uppers lowers triggers...you name it....

so there are about a dozen companies that make uppers and lowers, and a whole slew of small companies making the rest of the parts, plus all the after market parts.

the big difference in most of these is the level of inspection to drawing compliance. what they pay for compliance, affects cost, but ensures quality.

there are several companies with years of history with quality...colt, armalite, rock river, stag...bushmaster was once, but moved and has an unknown hostory at this point. there are several johnnie come lately companies with glitzy names and stuff and high prices...your call... silly to me.

( stag is an exception to the process..thier parent company..cmt is a MAJOR maker of ar parts...so thier costs/quality is inhouse ensured...thier rifles reflect both resonable cost and great quality)

there are several 2nd tier companied , in my opinion...i would not own them.....not allowed to post names.

sw probably fits in the upper catagory but is acutally very late getting in to the ar game....

I own two S&W 15's

I am in no way an AR expert. I am an active BR shooter who was first introduced to AR's in the Army in the 60's. I have alway said I will never own one. However, in the last year I have bought 2. The first was a S&W 15PC. I have not had any malfunctions and have shot a variety of ammo, some of it 50 yrs old. The accuracy ( 40x Leupold) has been a max of 1" at 100 yds. Several handloads with no work up have been 1/2" with 4 in a hole and 1 a bullet away....5 shot groups. I bought another in the Patrol model so my wife can handle the weight. I am happy with this one also,no malfunctions and much better accuracy than I hoped for.

I am in no way an AR expert. I am an active BR and LR competitor. I was first introduced to the M16 in the 60's in the Army. I have always said I would never buy an AR. However,in the last year I have bought 2. First was a S&W 15PC. I have shot a variety of ammo, some of it 50 yrs old and have not had any malfunctions. Not one. Every thing I have shot(5shot groups) has been 1 moa or less. Several handloads with no workup are consistantly .5 to .6. This is with a 40x Leupold. The second one is a S&W 15 Patrol. With a red dot it is more accurate than I would have hoped for.The fact that something is "mil spec" does nothing to give me a sense of something special. If I suscribed to the "gotta be a Colt", I might also think I need to drive a Model T.
