Thinkin' it's barrel time and wondering: Does anyone just shoot a straight 220 Russian? I'm thinkin' there can't be much difference in capacity between it and the .100 short PPC. I know better than to go against the 6PPC, but I am not smart, nor rich, nor handsome, and blessed with just enough taste to not want what everyone else has. Please educate me, or, convince me I am too dumb for my own good. I've got 6's and all the stuff that goes with them, just wanting something besides vanilla. MAYBE.

220 Russian

George Kelbly has shot the 220 Russian for years and has done well.

The biggest surprise of the year is the 6mm Beggs. Like the 220 Beggs, it is simply the Lapua 220 Russian case straight from the box, (neck turning is optional) with a sharp radius at the junction of the neck and shoulder. Sizing and seater dies are available off the shelf. The bushing-type sizing dies are made by Hornady, the seater dies by L.E. Wilson. Reamers are available off the shelf from both JGS and PTG.

Velocities of 3350 to 3380 with 68 grain bullets are the norm, accuracy is equal to any 6ppc that ever came down the pike and it does so with two grains less powder than the 6ppc; recoil is noticeably reduced.

"So what's the downdside?" you ask. Beats me.

Does this case require more trimming...

compare to the standard 6ppc??

I alsways thought a straight .220 Russian would be a great round.

If you want to try a 22, I'd give the 220 Beggs a close look. The dies are available. Gene can tell you the bushing size, powder, and all the information he has found to work well. It's my understanding its capacity is very close to the 22PPC short. I can see no reason why the 220 Beggs would not agg well if well chambered.

Give Gene a call or email and I guarantee he will be of as much help as possible.

If you want to shoot the barrel in sporter, as Jerry said, a 22 won't work under the current rules.

The standard 220 Russian has a .125 radius at the junction of the neck and shoulder, which results in excessive growth in length with each firing. On the Beggs cartridge, this radius was sharpened to .060, the same as the PPC. This completely eliminated the growth problem and resulted in a round that matches PPC performance in every way and does so with two grains less powder. The bodies of both the 220 Beggs and 6mm Beggs cartridges are exactly the same and use the same sizing die by changing only the neck bushing.

In April of this year at St Louis, Jim McGowin set a new 300 yard NBRSA five-shot unlimited record, .355 using the 6mm Beggs cartridge.

Thanks Gene...

...the project I was thinking of (and not even on the radar yet) would be a custom gun but I would like a repeater action. Maybe one of Jerry's new hunting series action??

Any concerns in regards to feeding with your design?? It would be a no turn chamber.

Paul, no problem with feeding, Mike Bryant in Wheeler Texas figured that out real quick. A description of his magazine mod can be found at 6mmbr.com. One of my friends built a no turn 220 Beggs on one of Stiller's Predator actions and reports his rifle feeds perfectly.

Unlike the Ackley Improved cartridges, the 220 Russian case feeds well because of the shoulder angle and body taper. It also extracts easily.

A slick little bolt action in 6mm Beggs no-turn makes a dandy hunting rifle for anything up to deer-size game. For prairie dogs, the 220 Beggs no-turn is hell-on-wheels.

Hope this helps.

12 hour days, just got home.
Finally got to thank everyone for the info. The Beggs sounds good and will definitely be considered, possibly the greatest news of all is: I'M NOT A COMPLETE IDIOT!!!!! Seriously guys, thanks a bunch for your time.
