Ruger M77 Mark II-VT

I have a M77 MII VT with 1 in 12 twist. Can't find a good load and have other problems including a poor two stage trigger. I was told by a friend that the front lug needed to be extra tight about 60 in/lbs. I called Ruger twice and talked to two different customer service reps also sent an e-mail to confirm their answer. All the answers were the same and according to their engineers the front lug bolt needed to be at 95 in/lbs. You have got to be kidding. I had an extra tough time getting to 60. I know the front lug is angled, but this can't be real. Any ideas on this? By the way, these are the same folks that told me a 1-12 needed 69 to 74 gr. bullets. Also, any loads would be helpful.

Being a Ruger I suspect you have a long throat also. Being a 1:12 twist try 52-53 gr match bullets with H322 or N133. - nhk

i had a the same rifle a many years back, i had dreamed about it for years and saved up till that magical day when i could order it. i got mine in 220 swift and couldnt wait to stack bullets on top of each other. To bad that never happened. i tried every thing from 40gr bullets to 75's. and every reasonable powder and seating depth i could come up with. i sent the rifle back to ruger to be checked over and was told it was perfect. after having a local smith bore scope the barrel the problem was discovered. that barrel looked like i was machined by a cave man with a stone drill. Ater asking around apparently ruger makes some of its own barrels and out sources others. So you may get a hummer or a bummer. I hope you dont have the latter. I tried tubbs final finish to help smooth it out some and it helped getting groups under an inch and a half finaly. A few years later i got a hot deal and traded it off on a Savage model 12 in 220 swift and a ruger red label shot gun. supposidly the throat was shot out on the savage so i took it home and figured it soot it a few times then put a new tube on it. the frist 5 shots went into a ragged hole at 100 and i fell in love. To this day i am a savage freak and will probably never own another ruger rifle other than maby a 10-22.

Thanks for the advice, I give it a try next week. I believe your the guy I asked questions to about the Savage 12bvss with the 1 in 9 twist, yesterday. Your load of H-322 with the .015 jump worked on the the 69 gr MK. It shot about 1/2" . I hope I can find something else a few grains lighter for it. The Ruger has a lousy trigger-any suggestions?

mid way has both a timney and rifle basix trigger kit for the mark II, the timney is a little more but with give you some adjustment. its wont be a jewel trigger but its a vast improvement over the ruger trigger.

I have a ruger 77V and it can be made to shoot a little better than OK, below an inch with match bullets, maybe around 3/4 inch. It has a chamber that is at the large edge of the SAAMI specs and a long throat.
The only way to get it to shoot is to use only neck sized brass and seat the bullets way out towards the lands.
Both of those tricks should help you some.
Mine has a barrel as rough as a dried corn cob. It didn't take a bore scope to figure that out. You can feel it in the cleaning rod when a patch is run down the barrel. But it doesn't shoot well when first cleaned. I guess a little copper in nicks, pits and scars help smooth things out.
Try those things and see if it helps.

Thanks to all you guys for the help. This gives me plenty to try for the next couple of weeks. By-the-way, the Timney trigger doesn't fit the VT but the Basix trigger will.
