I have a tang saftey Ruger in a swift thats got me puzzled. Normally I full length size this round but recently bought a neck sizer. Before and After neck sizing the round will not chamber. Brass has only been loaded once and not a hot load at all.If I FL size bolt closes slick.I called Ruger to ask them and they said just shoot factory loads....( to release them from any possible issues with reloads.)

Ive been reloading for over 20 years and have never run into this.Any ideas as what might be going on? Tight chamber? Brass is Winchester.

Thanks

Same problem

I had the same problem with my Swift. (different manufacturer). I found that the brass just above the web was expanding (very slightly), just enough to keep from chambering. I now FL resize and no problems. I am not loading a hot load either. Winchester brass.

I have been shooting a Swift at Prarie dogs for years and had this problem early on.

Hope this helps.

I shoot a Remington, factory Savage and Savage with a Douglas barrel in 220 Swift.

I neck size for all these and have not seen the problem you describe.

I checked and all my 220 Swift brass is Remington. Possibly there is a difference in the behavior of Remington and Winchester 220 Swift brass.

220 swift

i've been loading for a ruger 77v tang safety and a 77sporter tang safety
for over 20 years, neck size with rcbs or bonanza die, winchester, remington,
frontier-hornaday, and norma i load middle to light loads have loaded some
cases up to 12 times never a problem except have to trim quite a lot.

Barnabus,

The way you have worded your post it says that the once fired brass will not chamber BEFORE neck sizing. Does that mean that you loaded the brass from new, fired it once and upon extracting it will now no longer enter the chamber ??

About the only way that can happen is if you are loading very hot or you have some dimensional issue like an out of round chamber or a very loose chamber and/or a misaligned bolt which is leaving the rim off centre of the fired case and the rim is binding in the bolt face.

A bad batch of brass might be a possibility as well, if some are chambeing and not others. I once had some brass with rims eccentric to the case body. When the brass was fired and expanded a little ahead of the rim some of the brass expanded such that the expansion made the eccentric rim even more off centre. That mean that some cases would bind up on the bolt face when they were chambered and some would simply not let the bolt close over the rim at all.

Hi Bryce..Yes that is exactly what Im saying. What could Ruger do with this if it is an out of round chamber or a gunsmith thats local and is it worth fooling with to neck size?

If it is a chamber problem it likely can only be cured with a new barrel. I would have a chamber cast made to see exactly what is the problem. If the chamber is out of round or way out of specs I'd contact Ruger and see if they will replace the barrel. If it were mine and it had a serious problem I'd try to get it fixed. Failure to chamber once-fired brass is not the way things should be if pressures are OK.
