Rockwell Lathe Problem

I have a Rockwell 11x36 lathe I do my own barrel work on. A gear in the gearbox went bad and I plan to replace it with a off the shelf reborable spur gear from Boston Gear. It will have to be machined a bit but I'm confident I can do it. My problem is I don't know the pressure angle of the gears used in the Rockwell gearbox. I took one of the gears to two different suppliers and one guy says he's sure it's 14.5 degree and the other guy says he's sure it's a 20 degree. Would anyone here happen to have any experience in this area and be able to help me?

Brian,
I've got a 14" Rockwell and I don't know. I've heard both. I've got 16 DP gear cutters for both PA's in case I ever need one. You might try Joe at Plaza Machinery. He's probably as familiar with them as anyone.

The best thing I could tell you is to take a mating gear to the gear supply house and have them check it or scan the profile and send to Boston Gear. They should be able to tell you.

You could also ask the question here http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/
Lot of gear savy folks there that might be able to tell you specifically or tell you how to find out what you have.
Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

You may want to try Martin Gear & Sprocket and Rush Gear. Rush sells gages also, too. Your best bet is to find a parted out ockwell.

I believe

they are 20 degree angles. A friend of mine and I where talking about one today. He's making some blanks for Bridgeman machine sales. They have a couple their that they will sell you. It's in Detroit just off of 8-mile. They might be a little cheaper??? maybe??? 313-366-1060 is the no# couldn't hurt to call them....

There is a guy from the Practical Machinist forum that makes replacement tumbler gears and clutch worm gears for the Rockwell 11x36 and he says the gearbox gears are 14.5°. I bought a couple of tumblers and another spare clutch gear from him. If you ever need either of those you can get him by sending a PM to alcosteam on the Practical Machinist website.
