Hi Guys
I havent been here in a while but hope you can help do you support the range rod with your tailstock or just fit the rod in the barrel and indicate off of the rod with no support. If so do you take a couple measurements over the whole length of the range rod.Range Rod is from Dave at PTG. Thanks Mike

Range Rod

I let the range rod end float unsupported and use two .0001" test indicators to dial out the bore runout on setup. One indicator is right next to the barrel and is adjusted with the 4-jaw chuck and the other indicator is at the far righthand end of the range rod and is adjusted with the spider on the back of the headstock. I support the barrel in the chuck using a copper ring made of 1/8" copper grounding wire to ensure free movement when adjusting the spider.

You'll probably get some responses telling you range rods are junk and just dial in both ends and run it, but thats what makes this forum interesting. Most smiths think their way of doing things is the only way.
