Rimfire match pistol ammo speed 24" bbl?

Anyone have an idea what speed match pistol ammo say 1014 does in a 23 -24" bbl? Maybe 1030 or so in a rifle bbl?? An estimate or educated guess would be great. thanks joe:)
 
Joe, I am afraid the only intelligent answer is that you have to put it through your rifle over a chronograph to see. I assume maybe you don't have access to a chronograph, right? I shot several kinds of ammo over a chronograph last weekend, and one thing that seemed consistent was that the pistol ammo gave a little higher veolcities. Was told by a fellow at Champion's Choice that the pistol version of match ammo is a little hotter than the rifle ammo because of functioning problems with match pistols. That makes pretty good sense & my chronograph results seem to agree. Hope this helps you a little.

thank you for the reply. I do not have access to a chrony, if i may ask a couple of questions. were you testing the ammo in a rifle or pistol and what actual speeds did you observe?

I was testing in a custom BR rifle with a Hart 28" barrel. Can't remember the velocities, but around 1070 I think. It's gonna vary with which ammo, maybe by quite a bit.
If you are thinking of serious rimfire BR shooting, you will need access to a chronograph from what I am reading. Did you read the articles on RF Central about ammo testing - interesting & informative. Sorry, but can't tell you how to find them. I think there was a link to them from a post by Nipper on this forum recently.
 
My View

Most of the posted speeds on Eley boxes will not match the actual speeds as recorded with a cronograph, Longer barrles will shoot this slower speed ammo much higher than that printed on the box. I wish it was that slow in some of my rifles.
 
I remember long time ago I was short of ammo on a hunt & found a box of pistol ammo lying around in the car. As I recall, I could almost see the arc of round as it went out & hit the dirt in front of the bunny at 50 yards.

I'm guessing that it's not much.

Mr. Dan the speed is 1014, eley match pistol. You have it listed and i was thinking about ordering a few boxes with a few boxes of the round nose 1050 stuff.
I tried the 1065 Match this morning and it did good but not as good as the 1065 Team i had, maybe it's just the conditions have changed.

For anyone who might be interested, here are some of my chronograph results. These are all 25 shot strings over an Oehler 35P shot from my Hart 28" barrel at abought 80 degrees.

1) Eley Match EPS, box speed 1065 - Chrono avg 1046
2) Eley Match Semi-auto, box speed 1056 - Chrono avg 1071
3) Eley Team, box speed 1062 - Chrono avg 1058
4) Lapua Pistol King - Chrono avg 1074
5) Lapua Rapid Pistol OSP - Chrono avg 1055

Barrel was cleaned lightly between strings & re-fouled about 7 shots before the next string was fired.

You can spend alot of time on the speeds and ect. The only thing that counts is if it shoots a good target or not. You find out all the info and speeds and they are good for that day. The next day the temp. or the air density is different and the ammo shoots different. If you have a tuner you can sometimes compensate for the weather but not always. If you went to a match you would see that out of 20 people shooting 5 of them will have their gun shooting real good in the morning. Two hours later there will be other people shooting real good. Out of the guns shooting good in the morning maybe 3 of the shooters figured out how to make their gun shoot good in the afternoon. They changed ammo or the tuner setting to keep the guns shooting well. Rotation of benches also plays a part in this. Hope no one told you this was easy, it ain't.
 
Mr james that's some great info. It took a while -i did begin to notice a 10 degree difference in temp changed my groups size. For a long time i was just shooting and didn't have a clue what was changing what. I don't mind the challenge, trying to figure out the parameters gets me stuck sometimes. There is a lot of good info but nothing like what you just posted, thanks.

I'm trying to get together some different speeds of ammo. I was hoping pistol ammo would be my low end stuff -maybe 1045 or so. I can't find any 1055 eley -seems to be all sucked up by the all knowing, lol.

I have some SK pistol match but i didn't have enough head space to shoot it in my turbo. Today i recut the chamber on Mr fred's Shilen and added .04 to the head space -should be able to test some Pistol match tomorrow. Mr fred is also sending me the tuner he had on the Shilen i got from him.

The Eley Team i just ran out of and nobody has any now, had the widest "window" of any ammo i have shot. It would flip one out ever 10 shots or so, but now i can recognize a flipper.

I never shot with a tuner, that's gonna be fun -i been standing by the mailbox for 2 days now looking for that tuner, lol! joe :)
 
What I am looking for with the chronograph is low SD combined with good looking results on the target. Once I find some relatively consistent ammo, I want to see what I can do with it with the tuner.

Depends on the pistol barrel length, but it's probably about the same.
 
Tim, this is what I got, best to worst.
1) Eley Match EPS 1065 - Avg 1046, SD = 7
2) S-K Pistol Match Special - Avg 1081, SD = 8
3) Lapua Pistol King - Avg 1074, SD = 8
4) Eley Semi Auto 1056 - Avg 1071, SD = 9
5) Eley Team 1062 - Avg 1058, SD = 9
6) Lapua Rapid Pistol OSP - Avg 1055, SD = 13
I did some Wolf Match Extra also, but the results were not very good & didn't seem to parallel the way it shoots. I'll do that over when I get a new printer head for the chronograph. The printer quit feeding paper after I finished with the RF ammo & was checking some 22 K-Hornet ammo. Ken Oehler is sending me another printer head.
 
Just call Ken, Butch. His number is still good. Send him $50 and he sends you a new one to install, or you can send him the whole printer/electronics box & $50, and he'll put it in & send it back.
