Rimfire Action doing duble duty?

Hi all...I am fairly new to this site, but have read it very extensive...great info...

I am looking for a little insight into single shot actions being able to shoot both a .22 LR and at .17 HMR with a barrel change. The barrels in question would be built for that specific round (22 or 17). It’s the action I am most concern about…could a .22LR action be used (after a barrel change) to shoot and eject a .17 HRM cartridge case?

I am looking at a Anschutz 2013 action if possible in doing the double duty…if not would any of the custom action ( Hall, Falcon or Stiller…etc.) be able to do double duty ?

Thanks for your help

John

The new CZ455 is a switch barrel from the factory. And I believe it will eject 22RF, 17 mk2, 22Mag and 17HMR.

Sako has a "Quad" rifle that comes with all four barrels..........

I would think the only issue you might have is ejecting the spent case. I might be wrong, but there might be a slight rim diamer difference between the Magnum and standard RF cases??

Thanks RoyB...

Thanks for the reply…I know about the CZ 455 & Sako...I am not looking to buy a new gun, but rather was looking for some info more specifically about Anschutz 2013 (54 Square) action that is set up for 22LR...I would buy a new barrel, chambered in .17HMR. My main concerned about ejecting the .17HMR casing out of the standard receiver. I am also aware of the .17Mach II, but at this time I am not interested in that chambering.

I have a friend who converted a 40X Remington to .17HMR and he had to enlarge the bolt face counterbore for the larger rim size. If your fired .17 HMR case will fit in the space between the bolt and the breech and allow it to clear, it should eject. I don't have a 2013 handy to look at the amount of space available. But anyway, if it has enough space to allow you to lay a loaded .17 HMR round in the loading tray, you should have enough for it to eject, if that makes sense.

I've built, serviced, repaired a great many 20 series Annie actions. -to inlude a couple of the original "tool room" prototype actions that were blued and didn't have the funky crucifix looking recoil lug set up on the bottom (the proto's were flat bottom all the way)

If your looking at the 17 HMR with this action (or any rimfire receiver intended for 22lr) there's a few challenges to overcome.

1. Ejection length on the bolt. You'll need to increase it.
2. Bolt face diameter. The 22WRFM and the 17HMR have a larger OD on the rim than the 22LR.
3. Ejection port length and the physical placement of the ejector (built into the loading plate). the ejector will likely attempt to kick the case out before it's cleared the breach of the barrel. In other words, you have a traffic jam.
4. The bolt stop is also going to be a biche as it's tracking in a slot milled in the side of the bolt body. (since the bolt body doesn't rotate like a CF would) It's going to have to be lengthened in order to get the case out of the chamber to eject it.
5. The 20 series Annies are harder than a whore's heart. Chewing on one in a mill is possible but you better have some good tooling, work holding, and a mill that's rock solid.

Good luck.

Anything's possible, but your in for a few late nights with this one as there isn't a whole lot of real estate to work with. Can't go bezerk on the rear bridge as this provides the bulk of the support for the bolt body when in battery It also stabilizes the fire control.

As previously mentioned, the little Mach II is literally a drop in deal as the case length and rim OD are right in line with a 22LR. Swapping a barrel on one of these actions is a 5 minute process with a torque wrench. -which BTW I have the factory bolt torquing sequence schematic if anyone ever needs it.

There may be an additional prob. The cartridge rim may hang up on the loading tray when chambering a fresh round.

I have converted an Annie 64 from 22lr to 22mag. This is a rec that I threaded and I robbed the mag bolt from a 64P project I had laying around. The 22mag bolt would fire and eject 22lr rounds just fine when the action was fitted with a 22lr bbl. Strangely, the poi was about 1/4" higher when using the 22mag bolt versus the 22lr bolt when firing a 22lr cartridge in the 22lr bbl. I also have a 17HM2 bbl for this rifle and have fired the rifle in 3 classes at the same event by changing between the 22lr and 17hm2.

For the 22mag conversion I had to alter the ejector to allow extraction and ejection of an UNFIRED round. You will probably find that the std ejector will eject an empty case just fine but extracting a fired round will be a major pita unless you cut the ejector back.

So, Ray.... I'm gonna' hijack just a wee bit. You have a good rifle chambered in MachII. So tell me, is it accurate?

I'm currently of the opinion that the little beast is simply the best rimfire chambering ever invented and I have trouble finding anyone who agrees.

Care to comment?

I want to thank all for their feedback...especially, Chad & Ray...great insight...I think if I start fooling around (and I mean getting a good gunsmith) with this action (I would hate to destroy a 2013 action...I might be better off ($$$) looking towards an action like a Falcon, which looks to have a large enough ejection port to handle a unfired .17HMR round, if needed...more research is needed…

Thanks again for all the input...

I've never really spent much time shooting it at 50 or 100 yds. I have shot it in 2 long range BR silhouette matches. It does fine until you get to the 188 meter rams. You have to hit the rams on the head to knock them over. A body shot leaves them standing. Also my bbl is a cheap GM blank. I have an Annie 54 17hm2 bbl I was going to fit to a 2013 but I haven't made it happen yet. I will say that the bullets loaded in the factory 17 rounds suck.
