My rifle balances 1" ahead of the receiver ring. How close to this point should I position the forend on the front rest for optimum control and accuracy?

You have not told us anything about your rifle, rest, bags, or the way that you hold (or do not hold) you rifle when shooting. The quality of the answers can be no better than the information that you provide. Short answer....it depends.

Boyd, hope this helps : it is a 22# IBS unlimited and F class rig with Barnard action and trigger, 30" 1.25" dia. Krieger chambered in 7 Rem Mag, NF BR 12-42 scope, 3" wide forearm Precision Rifle laminated stock, joystick front rest with 3"sand bag, Gator rear bag, shot free recoil. Butt to receiver ring is 20" and ring to muzzle is 29.5". Ring to tip of forearm is 13" and stock lnth is 33.

Like me, has lead in butt for balance.

Excellent report. I hope that a 1,000 yard shooter gives you a good answer. Personally, I would do some testing.
