RFD action

I've been looking through the classifieds for a possible rifle and have seen at least two rifles with RFD actions being real new to BR type actions. What is this action how does it compare to others? What is a good action to start with can you out grow an action? All I have shot is local factory varmint class at Dublin GA with an XR-100 in .223 Rem. Thinking of moving up to real Benchrest.
Thanks Dave:rolleyes:

Dave,

I believe that the RFD action is/was manufactured by Bob Dowd. It is a stainless steel action about the size of an XP-100. So it is short but stiff. The wall thickness of the action is greater than a Rem.

If I am not mistaken, Dowd was a partner with Brad Rosenthall and they produced a similar action under the name Precision Rifles. That action was also SS and the size of an XP100. The bolt handle is different between the two but the other difference are minor (I think). Both were made in Rb/Rp and Rb/Lp.

Both are very nice actions, close tolerances, fluted bolts, and Remington dimension bbl tenions.

The Precision Rifles action was made in limited numbers but parts are basically all Remington. Same with the RFD action.

If I am far off base here, you can bet that there will be those that will set me straight.

If you are looking for one of the above to start BR shooting, email me at:

Hope that helps.

. . . What is a good action to start with can you out grow an action? . . .
You can, but 80% of the time that is psychological. With short range BR, I started with a 40X. Convinced myself I needed a Panda. Then, I liked my big BAT so much for long range, convinced myself I needed a BAT for short range. In fact, two of them, one with an ejector. Then I convinced myself a drop-port Viper was the cat's meow. Lately, I've been going back to the Panda . . . They are all good, it is more a matter of shooting style.

So there is the other 20% -- shooting style. You can't possibly know where that will take you. So don't worry about it. If the RFD fits you budget, it will work as well as any of the others for a first rifle. If you keep liking it, no reason it can't take you to the hall of fame . . .

Parts are Remington??

The RFD action is a custom action made of SS and the only thing Remington about it is the size. It has very close tolerances and a coned bolt. It also uses 18 threads per inch on the tenion. These are very good actions as are the Rosenthals. Good shooting...James Mock

It's DODD. As in Mr. Bob Dodd. Or, as we affectionally like to call him - no wait, I can't use that kind of language on the Forum. ;););):D
