Could someone explain a little about reverse taper to me? I am wanting to rebarrel a Suhl and wondering what this does to the barrel, good or bad.

Good if done right, it's like having a non-adjustable muzzle devise. Most often used on sporter class SB bench rifles. If you do a search on 'Calfee', 'reverse taper' you may come up with some info. I know it's been discussed here before.

Benchmark Barrels makes a reverse taper barrel. The muzzle has a larger diameter than the breech end. Bob Barnhart won the ARA Nationals using a Benchmark reverse taper barrel I believe.

So does the barrel actualy get larger as you go towards the muzzle in a smooth taper or is it a swell at the end of the barrel?

There's a section of barrel near the action that's larger to allow the gunsmith adequate material for chambering and threading into the action, then the smaller section begins and there is a gradual increase in diameter towards the muzzle.

Thanks for the description, they must look very odd! But if it works....
