Reticle choice

New guy here; just scratching the surface of this. I have gravitated to mil/mil as my system. But I'd like to get input from experienced shooters as to their system ( mil v moa) and recticle choice. I don't have access to an experienced shooter, so....that brings me here to glean some insight.

I'd like to avoid purchasing and re-purchasing a scope. The one I have gets me out shooting, but is not a keeper.

Background: I have shot one 600 yd match with my 700 (506 6x). It's a 308 win, 26" varmint barrel 1:12 twist. I'm loading 180 gr SMK's with either Varget or H380 or 4064, whichever is available.

I want to get (somewhat) proficient at 600yds before moving further back. The f/tr is the class is I want to compete in.

I would appreciate any information/advice. Thank you in advance.

My preference is for minimum or no decoration. My Leupold VX IIIs are either duplex or hair plus dot & my Nightforce BR is an NP-R2 only because I find their crosshairs too light for all conditions I experience. I fear that use of mil dots & the like to aim off is an excuse to screw up sometime. Just put the crosshair on your adjudged hold off.

Thank you, John. I have heard some say mil adjustments are too course, also. At 600yds .1mil is 2.1" vs 1.5" for 1/4 click moa adjustment.

Second question is about focal plane choice. It seems in the this type of shooting FFP is not needed because distances are always known. So SFP are the norm, correct?

I believe 1/8th MOA adjustments on a second focal plane scope is ideal for F-Class. The X-ring is only 1/2 MOA, so if you aren't perfectly centered vertically, you are going to lose more points to wind due to less room for error. I recently switched from a 12-42 NXS with NP-2DD reticle to the new Competition with CTR-1. I prefer non-cluttered reticles. You can use the rings to hold off, so personally I don't see the allure of FFP scopes or ranging reticles for F-Class. Take a look through a few scopes at a match before you purchase a new scope and you will make a more informed decision.
