The Isabella County Sportsman’s Club hosted a 100 and 200 yard score shoot on August 30, 2014. Seven benchresters attended the fine event that was directed by Steve Robbins. The pit crew did a remarkable job in setting and retrieving targets too. Some shooters traveled long distances to compete – Dudley Pierce and Jim Dyke from the westside of the state and Lowell Hottenstein and his wife from the southern section.
We started the morning shooting the 100 yard score match. It was a horse race until the final shots were fired. Steve Robbins won the event with a 250-21X and Ron Breedlove was a very close second with his 250-20X. And finishing out the top trio was Lowell Hottenstein with his 250-20X. Ron had the higher X count in the second target thus edging out Lowell. The winds were blowing from 6-7 o’clock at 20-25 mph making for very trying shooting. Storms were predicted for all day but we didn’t experience any until the afternoon.
The Judge’s Bench was the noon retreat for lunch. It’s a good place to go to either get your belly full or cry and whine about the day’s shooting! They do make the best deep fried turkey gizzards this side of the Mississippi.
The 200 yard score event commenced at around 2:00pm with the imminent threat of thunderstorms all around us. We managed to dodge most of them except for one that soaked the targets before we could shoot on them. In his typical winning form, Brian Albee (and wonderful wife Helen who assists Brian) proceeded to win the 200 yard event with 250-10X using his 6PPC! Ron Breedlove was in close second (with his 6PPC too!) with a fine 250-7X. Bringing up the end of the top trio was Jim Dyke with 249-9X shooting his .30.
Both the 100 and 200 yard events were compiled for an aggregate. Ron Breedlove won the aggregate with 500-27X. Second place went to Dudley Pierce with his 499-26X. And third place was won by Lowell Hottenstein with 498-31X. The Sandbagger Class was won by the author, Matt Dardas with a 497-20X.
Many big thank you’s go to Steve Robbins, Harry Ross, and the
Fred Ross (The Pit Crew) for all the help to put on this match!
