reset stylus angle dial indicator

OK, what am I missing here.....

I bought all my stuff used, no directions.

-I've unscrewed the stylus thinking it may have been bearing on the race as a lock.

-I've tried prying the gap with two screwdrivers, like snapring pliers.

-I've taken the stylus out of it's mounting needles and looked at it. Can't find anything.

C,mon you'se guys..... what am I missing?

sumpin, simple-stupid?

I have a Mitutoyo dial test indicator. I don’t know if yours is like mine, but where the stylus meets the body is a friction fit. It will move up and down to different angles. It was kind of scary the first time I tried it, but I could see no other way.

I don’t know what will happen since you have been after it with a couple of screw drivers.

I also don’t know why no one else has responded so proceed with caution.

Just like Ron said, mine are also friction fit. Make sure the stylus is screwed in snug before trying to move it. The little spanner nuts and the screws on each side are adjustments for the ball bearings so don't pry on the housing.

I'ma' just grab that stylus and yard it over eh!! :p

As far as I can tell that's the correct method.... I took off the sideplate and the thing's perty well supported inside.

I haven't buggered anything, the dealio with the screwdrivers was just to slip two of them into the slot on the end and gently lever the thing apart in the interest of breaking any sort of stiction built up over time. It readjusted and works just fine except that I hadda' build an offset bracket for it to use it!

Here's what I'm guessing happened.

I keep the gages all up on a metal shelf but I've got teenagers etc... One of the indicators must have gotten bumped somehow, maybe I just bumped it putting it away..... Anyway,I went to use it one day and the stylus was setting at 90 degrees to the dial, just PAST 90 actually. Not broken or anything, just not where I'd last used it.

I'll yard it over.........

I went through the same thing when I bought my first indicator, an Interapid with the long arm! I just couldn't bring myself to move a precision instrument to the end of it's travel, then lean on it until it moved to where I wanted.

I actually bought a second cheaper one on sale to try it first...worked fine. Then I had the nerve to try it on my Interapid. I need at least two indicators, anyway.:D
