Republicans In Senate Abandon Anwr Oil Drilling

Senate Republicans have abandoned efforts to include oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) as part of the energy package they are putting together. Instead, they are pushing increased offshore drilling, a measure that also faces stiff opposition, especially in California. The ANWR battle has been fought many times over the past 15 years--but each time drilling there has been defeated.

T. Boone Pickens, a well known oil man, is running a series of major network TV ads over the next several weeks pushing alternatives to oil. He says emphatically that we can't drill our way out of our energy problems. If anyone knows the score it should be him.

Maybe if the Republican Oil Lobby would agree to keep all the oil in the U.S. for us it might be reconsidered, but many don't want ANWR threatened to ship the oil to China! Funny about how some people are!

Drilling is a HOAX??

Nancy Pelosi has completely shut the door on expanding our efforts to drill for oil. Just like that, Nancy has decided that companies can use the areas that have already been approved for exploration. Period. End of story. She calls the idea of drilling in areas that are protected "a hoax." Well isn't that comforting? Better get used to these high gas prices.

Just a few points: Yes, there are some areas that have been opened to exploration, and yes, the oil companies have yet to pull any oil out of them. But there are some explanations. One, they've found no oil there to extract. Two, if there is oil there the depths involved and other logistical problems make extraction either impossible or far too expensive. The point here is that there are other areas where oil can be extracted economically .. and those are the areas shut down by Democrats.

Of course, according to Nancy Pelosi, the real problem is the Republicans. She says that efforts to expand drilling are "a decoy to punt your attention away from the fact that [Republican] policies have produced $4-a-gallon gasoline." Really? What policies are those Nancy? Tell me what policies the Republicans have supported that has caused our gas prices compared to Democrats. The truth of the matter is ... you're all failures.

Here's what's going on. Democrats understand that there is a strong likelihood that oil prices will drop – perhaps a lot – if the United States announces that we're opening up ANWR, the Florida Gulf Coast, the outer continental shelf, the oil shale lands out west and other areas to oil exploration and recovery. OPEC countries would immediately put downward pressure on prices in hopes that they could derail or forestall the new American effort. Democrats also know that the voters in this country have this nasty tendency to blame – or credit – the party controlling the White House for good and bad economic news. Democrats won't do anything that might allow the Republicans to look good ... even if you have to pay five bucks a gallon for gas.

Aren't you people just going to love it when Pelosi, Reid and Obama are running the whole show?

Drilling is a hoax?? Pelosi to blame??

You don't seem to get it--it's the Republicans who backed off on ANWR, not the Democrats.

The Real Story............................................. ....

GET IT STRAIGHT!!!

Senate Republicans table ANWR drilling

Too many caribou loving democrats to get it approved....even though most of Alaska wants it and needs it!!

Corrected Version

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Senate Republicans are dropping the oil drilling issue in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge this year.

A spokesman says Democratic opposition is too strong, and the caucus would rather focus on offshore drilling.Alaska Senator Ted Stevens says he doesn't agree with the party leaders, saying any energy plan without ANWR (An-War) is a "non-solution."

Republican leaders on the house side still favor ANWR as part of an energy strategy.

A spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner (bay-ner) says the goal is to at least have a vote on the record.

Phil,

Are you a Republican operative? You spin as good as some on TV! :D

By the way, is there anyone dumb enough to think the demand for oil around the world rose as fast as the prices did? Certainly demand is going up as China and India demand more oil, but do you think the more than doubling in prices overnight means demand doubled in that same time period. Of course not! Boy, are we suckers for certain favored industries! So who benefits from the oil prices????? Think!

Are you taking lessons from Bill Calfee?

Never mind, someone else will tell you who he is.

I am thinking of who benefits from higher oil prices. Give me the wisdom of an old guy's experience. Do we operate under a free enterprise economy or should some other method be applied to resources, like oil?
