removing the j safety pin from a Rem 700 shroud.

The problem with getting old and forgetful is better than the alternative I guess, but, on the newer Rem 700 bolts with that dastardly j pin, how do you remove the stupid thing? I have done 3-4 and have the old j pins. My problem now is I can't remember how I did it. I have the pin assembly out and the pin-to-shroud retainer pin out, the cocking piece off and a stuck there!!!!

HELP!!!

Are you trying to remove the J lock from the shroud so that you can reassemble the striker assembly without it? I have one her and with the J lock unlocked the firing pin comes out just like a standard one, once the cocking piece is removed.

This one is jammed for some reason. The cocking piece is off and the firing pin will not come out??
I can buy a new assembly w/o the stupid pin for $50 and I may do that after I get back from the NBRSA Nats.

you may have to relieve the pressure from the 3 foot too long spring, I've seen it fall apart then. I just replace it all I dont want any remnants of that piece of junk anywhere.

East Tennessee solution......

,,,,bigger hammer! :D

Buy new assembly for $50 and be done with that stupid crooked Remington spring too!!

Gene, drive up to Holton and we can BS for a week. Better yet use your SW Airlines pass and I'll pick you up at Muskegon Airport.

jerry did you figure it out?
Not yet. For the short term I ordered a new firing pin assembly from Remington, about $50. I wanted to get rid of that funny looking spring anyway. And I'm still unpacking and cleaning from the IBS and NBRSA nationals. Remington did away with that stupid design according to the Remington tech I talked to.

What may have happened is I had the J pin in the wrong position. The others I took apart may have been locked and this one unlocked or vide-versa.....now it's jammed??

Remington 700 is still the best all around commercial US made action, IMO.

I agree Jerry all the greats have down moments- new coke comes to mind- but if the ISS lock is as bad as remington ever goofs up the 700 thatll be fine. Best action on the market. Im just glad they have those other goofy designs to change and discontinue and experiment with plastic and all that so they leave the 700 alone
