I am having to remove clear coat from one of my rifles . How hard is this going to be and what is the best stuff I can get to do the job. Any help will be appreciated. garrisone.

get some aerosol auto stripper from say Pep Boys. Mask off the bedding, put on thick rubber gloves and a mask and give the clear a shot. This is going to go thru the clear and paint and into the primer if done right, the trick is not to leave it on too long. When it begins to blister, take a small putty knife and start quickly scraping. Scrape as much as you can and finnish up the rest with sand paper. Remember you have a window where it begins to work but you gotta scrape before it goes into the glass.
This stuff is generally pretty serious so don't breath it or get it on your bare skin.

I've removed a lot of finishes from cars and guns and there is nothing better than simple sanding. If all you wanted to remove was the top layer or clear coat this is probably the only way to do it. Any chemical approach may be a little bit faster, messier, and dangerous. I've always ended up just abrading away any finish I wanted to remove.
