Remington's EtronX

blunt shooter

Remington made an electronic ignition model 700, back in 2000. Since its debut I have heard no more of it. Seems like with it's claimed near zero lock time & trigger pull in ounces, we all should have one. Does anyone know whatever happened there.
Owen.

I asked something similar a few years ago and no response either.
I still dont know.
Must be in the X files somewhere.

Primers, primers, primers. Remington only offered them in calibers that used LR primers. That liklely has a lot to do with why more BR shooters didn't do more testing with them IMO.--Mike Ezell

Aside from expense, the battery on the firing pin spring for a conventional round doesn't just quit when least needed or expected either. :D

EtronX cartridges were made in several calibers, including some pistol chamberings. They have become a little bit collectable although they can still be found without searching too far. I'm not up on the weapons but I'd guess they may be more collectable.

Another of Big Green's bad decisions, IMHO.

The true test of the EtronX system would best be made by installing the EtronX system on a platform built to truly superb benchrest standards. Remington made their EtronX system available to the public in one of their regular 700 rifles, if I remember correctly, and a regular production rifle probably does not have the benchrest-quality to show any improvement due solely to the EtronX system.

The best way to see the effectiveness of the EtronX system is to directly compare an EtronX system-equipped, benchrest-quality rifle to an identical rifle which is not equipped with the EtronX system, under identical conditions.

Ray,
I can only find that three calibers were available in Etronix rifles, .220 swift,.22-250, and .243. Of course, they all use LR primers. Could you post a link to more info concerning these other calibers, please.--Mike Ezell

Mike

I don't have a link. In addition to the 3 rifle calibers mentioned above, they were made in 223 Remington. In fact, I think the 223 was the first one made but I don't think it was produced commercially. I've never seen a 223 rifle but I have seen boxes of 223 EtronX ammunition. I saw a whole case of it 2 or 3 years before the rifle was introduced. It may have been a prototype or a marketing test.

My information concerning pistol chamberings came from other collectors. I don't collect pistol cartridges. They reported having seen or owned EtronX headstamps on the following calibers: .40 S & W Pistol, .38 SPL +P Revolver, .357 MAGNUM Revolver, .44 S&W SPL Revolver. On those headstamps, "EtronX" replaces the normal "R-P" at the top position of the headstamp, with the caliber expressed normally. What pistols or revolvers may have been made for them I have no idea. One collector says that he also saw a 9mm Luger EtronX cartridge.

Some of the US military Project SALVO cartridges in the 1950s were also made with electric primers. But no one has identified what rifle they would have been used in.

Cartridge collectors turn up all sorts of otherwise unknown stuff, as you know.

The electric primer .22 NATO SALVO stuff was fired in the five barrel test fixture .

HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:
1JAN53 - 30JUN53 - "Theoretical studies were continued on the Salvo Hand Rifle and preliminary drawings of a five barreled firing mechanisms were well advanced."
1JUL53 - 31DEC53 - "Final changes of design were incorporated in a five-barreled firing mechanism for the Salvo Hand Rifle. The Armory completed the design and detailing of a Caliber .22 five-barrel test fixture and started fabrication. Test firings were scheduled to determine many parameters, such as pattern control and cumulative reaction forces when firing in Salvo or in rapid sequence. Tandem bullet firing of two Caliber .30 bullets, using a rechambered BAR, showed promise....
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company made a study of a number of the reports listed in Ordnance Research Office Report T160 and made preliminary calculations and firings and firings to determine various factors listed in their contract. They conducted limited studies of the possibilities of tandem bullet firing using single and double-barreled rifles. A new proposal was obtained and a contract supplement initiated, whereby the facility would make an extensive investigation of this means of fulfilling the 'Salvo' requirements."
1JUL55 - 31DEC55 - "The conversion of models of the Caliber .30 T48 (FN) Rifles to fire the Caliber .22 (T65 Cartridge with Sierra projectile) was nearing completion. Schematic designs of barrel arrangements, bolt actions and feeding devices were explored and studied relative to a design of a three-barrel prototype weapon weighing approximately ten pounds and firing semiautomatic salvos with the Caliber .222 Remington cartridge. Fabrication of a three-barrel, vertical alignment test fixture to weigh approximately 10 pounds and fire semiautomatically three-barrel salvos on single shots to be used obtain information on handling and recoil effect upon the shooter was completed. Upon the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation (Salvo Contract) effort was applied to the following developments:
An erosion study of a Caliber .

The evaluation of relative hit probabilities of single-ball ammunition, and double-bullet cartridges was in process."

1JAN56 - 30JUN56 - "Twelve T48 (FN) rifles were rebarreled (chromium plated bores) and fitted with muzzle compensators. New firing pins with reduced diameter were provided and the bolt face bushed to correspond. These rifles together with a supply of modified magazines were shipped to Fort Benning for SALVO tests."
Double Barrel Rifle (Olin) - The basic design of a double barrel rifle using the FN type of bolt and carrier with top mounted gas expansion system was worked out. Much of the design and some detail drawings were completed and fabrication started. This rifle is designed to utilize a double-bullet Caliber .22 cartridge fired in semi-automatic salvos or as a full automatic weapon. It is amenable to change to other cartridge, bullet, and caliber combination."
1JUL56 - 31DEC56 - "The Multi-Barrel Rifle portion of Project Salvo was concluded with the exception of the double barrel rifle which was nearly ready for initial firing tests. A staff-study prepared in support of developing the single barrel high velocity rifle under Project Salvo was presented to Hq. Ordnance Weapons Command, and a mechanism study of such a weapon started."
For the Salvo Program, test and weapon barrels have been made in calibers from .125 to 7.62mm both smooth bore and rifled for experimental and engineering test use."

Ray you take GREAT photo's.

I always wanted to convert my BR rifle to Etronix. Being a retired EE, I have a good idea of a firing circuit, and a few Micro switches in my junk drawer, and all is needed is to insulate the firing pin, with a weak spring just to contact the primer. But I asked on a few forums if anybody had a couple hundred primers I could buy for testing...no dice. Definately less vibration than a 28 lb Wolff spring, I'll bet.

at 7.99 a box if I new where a 220 swift e-tronix was I would buy it, you can't load them for 40 cents a shot.
