Remington, Sako ???

I have a Remington 700, 22-250 that I can't seat the bullet out far enough any more. I would like to have it rechambered to a .204 Ruger and have been told that the bolt head will have to be changed over to a Sako. For some reason I got it in my mind that doing so will block the gas port on the receiver. What will be the advantages or disadvantages of having this done.

Thanks guys

The action will not work as a repeater for the smaller case... It is not a matter of rechambering, it will require a new barrel as well... the Sako extractor conversion is a terrible thing to do to a 700 action.... in my opinion. Pick up a .223 size 700 and rebarrel it...

The only reason it was done to start with was many years ago with the PPC case, it was a requirement to do it ....but it weakens the design and strength of the 700 greatly...

I second the idea of keeping the Remington extractor. In many thousands of rounds through many Remington actions I have never had a failure to extract. It's just not needed for the majority of uses.

If it were me, I'd rebarrel the .22-250 as is and look for a .204 Ruger in some other rifle - like a Savage etc. It will be cheaper in the long run.

I don't think its a good idea to take a .473" bolt down to a .223 sized. You can probably have your .22-250 barrel set back and she'll shoot much better and you'll only lose an inch or so. Find a good used .223 Remington and rebarrel to .204 Ruger. Donor rifles can be had for about $300 pretty easily and you can sell the sporter wood and old barrel for whatever you can get for 'em. You can find stocks for around $150 or so, Shilen barrels for $230.

Thanks for the replys. You guys are a big help. I gonna have it rebarreled as is (22-250 ) and look for a .223 action.

OR you can have your 700 action rebarrelled to .22 BR. I've had two .22-250's and while they're okay the .22 BR will do anything the .22-250 can with bullets up to 52/53 gr barrels will last longer, and you use less powder doing it. The .22 BR has the same case head diameter as the .22-250, so the only thing that's needed is a new barrel and a single shot adapter.

If you don't reload of course you're limited to the .22-250 or maybe the .220 Swift.
