There are many variables here... to many to really diagnose the problem... Is there a fired shell in the chamber? Is rust involved? Is it the old style safety that locks the bolt? The trigger doesn't move much at the best of times? Do you have the metal out of the stock? How experienced are you with bolt action rifles and triggers and how they function?

I don't know how much you know about rifles.
My advise is treat it as if were a loaded rifle''
Take it to a good gunsmith and let him find the problem.

Rem 700 safety

I have the exact opposite problem. My Mountain Rifle in .280 has the safety stock in "off" and requires about 100 pounds to take it off safety, but normal pressure to move it back on. When the safety is off it works fine. I have had the gun since new and it has been all over the country in the past 20 or so years. I plan on taking it to a gunsmith. He hasn't seen a similar problem before, so I thought I would ask if anyone has had a problem like this to help him solve the problem.

By the way, I took the action out of the stock and doused it with Kroil heavily, with no result. There is no sign of rust anywhere. The gun looks almost new. I take really good care of my guns.

I was also thinking of replacing the trigger assembly with an aftermarket unit like a Timney anyway. I was sighting in two years ago in South Carolina and one of the shooters with me had his gun go off when he took it off safety. He swears his finger was nowhere near the trigger.

Thanks for your help.

I suggest you contact remington on this or one of it's service centers.
Taking it off safety should not be that hard.
I won't go farther then this.
Playing with the trigger can get you into big trouble.
