Remington 700 stainless 5R milspec

Yes, typical mile long throat.

With 155 Scenars loaded at 2.800", I had a jump of about 1/8".
 
5R Remingtons

I have had 5 customers send 308 Remingtons with 5R barrels to me this year, all with throat problems ( too long). All paid premium prices for these rifles. None would shoot sub 1.5 MOA at 100 yards. All had their actions checked and trued if necessary and rebarreled. Now all have Remingtons with aftermarket barrels that are chambered with throats that allow for COL length magazine use that shoot sub .4moa. Another gunsmith told me he had heard Remington had employees with flex hones and too much time on their hands. I had a Remington Model 7 that came from the factory with .137 excessive throat. Brought it to Remingtons Vice President of Engineerings attention. He sent me a e-mail back telling me when the gun was made and the distributor it was sent to. In my opinion Remingtons Engineering, QA, and attitude all could stand some improving. President Tommy Milner either doesn't know the problems or just does not give a damn. If Remington was to research this issue it would be irrefutable from the barrels that are out there. I hear the same problem mentioned over and aver again. This is the reason I suggest to my customers to buy an aftermarket Remington clone.

Before I spent $1000.00 on a factory 308 with a factory barrel I would look
around for a used SS700 with the right boltface,a HS precision stock like this one and have a BR gunsmith fit a good custom barrel,a jewel trigger and you will spend less money in the long run and save a lot of headaches and have a good shooting gun the first time without having to recrown,bed,and search forever for a consistant load.
I and my friends have been down this road until I started doing my own work.
Factory barrels are worth $7.00 each,sometimes you get a good one, but lots of luck, if you get one hang on to it,if not cut your loses and sell it.

Boy, if that is milspec....those boys are in trouble who are issued M24's.

Nick, no worries, I shoot Broughton and Krieger bbls on trued up 700 actions and aftermarket triggers.

I was just wondering if remington was living up to their advertisement with this bbl.

I would expect to get 1" out of the light bbl sps...cheapo!

Rebarreling a Remington..

I don't use cheap barrels, Remington does that and that is what we are trying to get away from. I would recomend a Broughton, Krieger, Lilja, Bartlein, Rock Creek. Not given in any special order.

Yeah, what I meant was the low priced remingtons normally shoot better that what you are seeing on the "milspec" rifle.

The milspec must be pretty loose I guess. I've seen this before on milspec with valves. The milspec actually allows for a certain amount of leakage in a valve....

Since when does mil-spec mean top quality. It only means minimum acceptable quality as defined by the goverment procurement system.
 
I have one that does have a long throat. I shoot 155 SMKs and it is one of the most accurate 30 caliber rifles i have ever owned. Consistently shoots in the 0.2s and 0.3s if i do my part. I seat the 155s at 2.905" with a healthy dose of Varget.:D
 
My 22-250AI has a 5R bbl

My 22-250 AI has a Rock creek cut rifled 5R bbl. Does that mean this Remington has a "Cut Rifled" BBL?
 
I just saw this topic. My Remington 5R shoots very well straight out of the box. I would say a 1/2 inch and better. I just won our last match in the factory class with this gun without any mods. Check the Austin Rifle club match statistics. My name is Lee Cox. It is pretty good but not as good as my Remington 40XB.
