Remington 700 short action questions..

Hi all;

Just acquired an early (mid 60's vintage) Rem. 700 short action for a project....Currently, it's a small diameter (.223) boltface & receiver rails...I want to convert it to standard .308.

First..the bolt face...:

Is it feasable to open up the boltface on Rem. bolts, or should I just look for a swap-out?....It has the early short bolt shroud & flat safety knob, which I love and want to keep....Will my short bolt shroud fit all rem short-action bolts, old or new (non-J lock)...?

Second;

I will need some dimensions on how much the rails need to be opened up for a 308 case...This seems straight forward to do from underneath..I just would need a simple diagram...
I have a 308 mag box and follwer, so that's taken care of.....

Any help on this would be appreciated.

The bolt face can be opened to 308W diameter and a new extractor installed (either SAKO or REM) but it may be cheaper to sell the bolt and buy a new one from Dave Kiff.

Bolt shrouds are interchangeable.

I don't believe any rail work is necessary. The "rails" are part of the magazine box.

It's more work than I would do for myself... the action needs altering as well as the bolt..

Your firing pin assembly and safety will swap over with any short action 700...

There is a slight difference between the feed rails on the .223 size action and the .308 size action. Sometimes they will feed without modification, other times they won't. Basically it's just a milling operation to make the feed rails of the .223 action match the same as the .308 action. It takes a little setup time and a lot more polishing after the milling cuts are made to get the burrs off the rails.

Thanks....About those rails....

Can anyone shed some more light on opening the rails to 308 specs?.....Are there any set-in-stone measurements? Where do I start? Should I throw a .308 box, spring & follower in ther and see if it runs as is?

Lynn.....I took the advice here and put the bolt up for a swap on the classifieds...If I don't get any bites, I'll get back to you with it.....but for now, a swap makes most sense for me...

Thanks guys....If you can shed more light on the rail-opening issue, it would be most appreciated...

Man, don't alter a good .222 action.. There are plenty of .22-250 through
.308 shorts out there. The small bolt faced actions aren't as common..
I'll buy it from you if you'd like..

Don....Bolt is on its way to you...US Priority mail..

Thanks for your generosity....I'll let you know when I receive your .308 bolt...Pleasure talking with you...
