i saw the article in precision shooting about accurate 22 sporters. i have a 541-s. why is there a big difference in the price of the s ( sporter) version versus the target hb model? is the sporter more accurate than the heavy barrel? thanks ron

The 541-S was the IR50-50 Sporter of choice untill the late 90's when the Sako Finfire took over. Rumor was that Remington bought Douglas barrels for the S model. They were definitely the more accurate version but I doubt the rumor was true about the barrels.

The price on these is based on collectability, not accuracy potential.

All of the folks who have 541S models and have owned 541THB models will more than likely tell you that the 541S was by far the better shooter. I have a buddy who has each. His 541S shoots way better. I've owned a 541thb. It shot ok. More times than not groups were around .5 or slightly under at 50yds. I've seen a 541S shoot, and my 541THB wouldn't do what it did.
