Remington 40 XBBR in .222 Rem. loading question

I acquired a Remington 40 XBBR in .222 Rem. I would like to use it in some of our clubs short range (100-200 yards) club shoots. What powder is best suited for the .222? I was thinking along the lines of H4198 or H322. Also what would be the best selection of bullets? There I was thinking a 52-53g, but what would be better a flat base or boat tail?

I have quite a bit of experience with 748. For my rifle, it worked better than 322. Another powder that was not available when the duce was at its zenith, is 133. Benchmark works well too. I would try more than one bullet in the 50 to 53 gr. range. I used to shoot all FB bullets, but recently I have tried some BTs in another .22 caliber rifle and they looked very promising. A good go to bullet to start with might be the 52 grain Berger, I hear good things about Bart's as well. I have used Lapua brass and Federal primers. I believe that those rifles had a .250 neck. You might want to check your loaded round clearance. Depending on the brass that you choose, you might be a little close.
 
My .222 likes VV N133 the best, although Benchmark is a close second, but dirtier. I tried H4198 and it wasn't consistently accurate. For bullets, I've only tried 52 grain flat base so far and the Berger's shot very good. Like Boyd, I use Lapua brass and Federal 205 primers in a .247 neck chamber.

Remington sent two test targets with my 40X BBR .222 that I bought in 78. They used 23.5gr-IMR 4895 with a 52 or 53gr bullet.
There is a lot of new reloading components since then. :)

There are some original Remington BR 22cal bullets in the classifieds for sale. I hear really really good things about those old bullets, the price is fair as well. The fella that has them is selling them by the 1000 and if thats to many for you to buy i would slip them with you. Another super accurate 22cal bullet is Ronnie Cheeks 52gr FB bullet. You would be hard pressed to find a better bullet. Good luck with your rifle, and i am serious about the bullet split if you would like to have some. Lee
 
I4895 worked well all last year for me. I'm using RL 7 this season and it's a little better. You might try a 52gr Hillbilly bullet.

I'd like to second the Reloder 7 suggestion. Velocities may not be the highest, but I've found accuracy to be excellent in several sporters.

These would be the powders in the order I would try them. I'm owned a 222 since the 70's and have put tens of thousands of rounds down them. My favorite is 4895. The reason I didn't move the VV powders up the line is because of cost. Also, a lot of people overlook 3031...nice powder.

I have the exact same setup and it loves 22.2 grns of H322 and Sierra 52 grn BTs. These are great little rifles. They will shoot most combinations well. The best bullets that I have found are Victor Johnson's 52 grn if you can get them. Al.
 
the best powder in my dueces is Tubal 2000 and BIB 52 grain pills. Criminal. :p
