Remington 30 Express Repair/Restoration

I have a decent Remington 30-S Express in 30-06 that needs some metal work if it can be done. I want to bring it back to original configuration with just Lyman #48 peep rear sight. However, The top of receiver was drilled and tapped for Weaver bases and the previous owner also had the left side of receiver drilled with two holes for a side mount but filled it in with something hard (Devcon ?) and looks terrible. The barrel and bolt are in super shape.

Are there any good gunsmiths in or near the Pittsburgh area that can repair/fill in the holes correctly and make the rifle look nice. The stock is in real nice shape but will need refinished with the correct sling swivels installed. The rear sling swivel has a little wood damage that will also need repaired.

I'm not sure how much a restoration like this would cost or whether it would be worth the trouble. PAT.
 
Define "worth the trouble."

If it means "will the work cost more than the rifle will sell for" then I'll say "probably."

Most likely 6/48 threads. Order from Brownells oversize 6/48 screws, screw these in tight but not all the way through,cut off and finish flush to reciever,reblue.

I don't think your rifle is worth more than a few hundred dollars with all the holes.

Buy another without the holes for $500.
 
Rem. 30 Express

Thanks for the input about values of Rem. model 30's. I still need to locate a good gunsmith who can fill in the drilled holes on the left side of receive. I don't belief these holes wil fit the Griffin & Howe, Inc. side plate and base. I was trying to find a smith closer to residence to do the work. But I'll probably contact Economy Gusmithing located in Sewickley, PA., which is over a 1 hour drive from my home. About 3 yrars ago they refinished an old Sako rifle stock for me and it turned out fabulous. I'll check to see what they can do metal wise on the receiver. PAT.

If theirs only 2 holes on the side of the reciever, it's way more likely it was for a reciever mounted peep sight than any kind of scope mount.
Most of the G&H mounts I've seen require 5 holes, 3 being tapped and 2 for taper pins.
I'm pretty sure the model 30 was also available right from the factory with a few different reciever peep sights attached.
I'd recommend you research that rifle a little bit before having any holes welded and refinished.

My 30-s Express has the two drilled and tapped holes on the right side of the receiver from the factory for the lyman #48 peep sight. However, the two large hloes on the left side are very high on the receiver and are not for the G & H mounting plate. I am having a local gunsmith plug the two large left side holes and I just put scope mount plug screws from another Remington I had up top on the receiver. The top doesn't look bad. PAT.

I love it, but the stock design and metal butt plate hits me a lot harder than my 9.3X62.
