Rem. Model 37--Tuner

I am a relative beginner using a Model 37 with a target barrel (bull) contour, the only change to which is the addition of a scope. The front sight attaches to a block ( I removed and saved the scope blocks (which were attached with screws) for a Unertl style scope). Although I have not checked it out (this thought came to me in my office, which is not where the gun is), I suspect that the front sight can also be removed from the block, and the block unscrewed from the barrel. Assuming that is the case, do Forum Contributers believe I will benefit from adding a tuner (or barrel device ala Mr. Calfee)? If so, I would appreciate suggestions as to tuners (devices) and recommended sources. I am taking this step by step. The gun was a gift and I am not yet comfortable (and may never be) doing major surgery such as restocking/rebarreling etc. I have reduced the trigger pull as much as is safe. (any thoughts as to preference of front rests from SEB, Fulgum, Shade Tree and Farley (regular and baby sized) would also be much appreciated. Thank you.

Do a little homework here with the search feature, most guns use them, you won't hurt anything on the gun, don't cost much. Only way to be sure is try your gun with one.

I have several 37's. They are marvelous rifles and can be extremely accurate.

You will want a tuner, eventually, if you are going to compete or want extreme accuracy. If you have an unmodified barrel it should hold its own without a tuner except in heavy competition. The tuner will make a good shooter better, but won't make a poor shooter excellent. A good 37 barrel should be very accurate.

Yes, you can remove the front globe and then remove the front sight block...it is identical to the middle block you already took off albeit a different height.

As made the trigger is good for something less than 2 pounds pull usually. A complete cleaning with lighter fluid and careful re-adjustment should get it to about 1 pound. Still way to heavy for benchrest competition. Your choice is to find a Kenyon trigger (I've been looking for another one for years with no luck) or send the barreled action to Butch Hongisto and have him do his magic on the 37 trigger.

If you want while Butch has the rifle ask him to look at, test your rifle in his fixture, and tell you what the rifle is capable of as is....you miggt be surprised, perhaps pleasantly so.

If the rifle is completely stock it may well be more valuable as a collectors item than as a shooter. Only you can make that determination based on your desires. None of mine are completely stock so I cannot reduce the value by working on them. That is fine with me, for I love working on and shoting the 37.

One thing you did not ask. If you want to install a modern scope without drilling the receiver for mounts you have choices. 1. Find a BKL 254 mount (they are coming back on line soon) that mounts on the rear scope block or purchase a Vianni mount for the 37....his web sight does not list them but Jeff may have one or two left in stock. They work very well indeed except that the scope is a bit higher than your factory stock comb will allow...you will need to raise the comb a bit if you like me push down hard on your cheek to keep the rifle in the rear bag.

PM me if I can help you in any way with your 37. You are very lucky to have one of them as only about 11,000 were ever made. bob finger
