i was told to ask you guys about this question...

i am considering either of these guns and am sort of leaning towards the browning after shouldering it at a shop... but what are the advantages of each?

which one should i get and why?

also which scope would be a good setup with the gun you think is better...

thanks

Considering the information given I can only assume you are talking factory class Benchrest. You will have to pick out the most accurate one of which only the shooter can tell. As far as scopes go, 36 power and up with Sightron being one of the cheaper and the March being the high end.

yeah factory
You shouldn't get either one to shoot benchrest factory class. Factory class will be fun only if you don't have to buy a new rifle for it, just shoot what you already have.

Why do I say this? OK, yesterday at Rockingham, we had 37 shooters. Only three were shooting factory class. Two of the three were experienced benchrest shooters (I was one of those). Two of the three were shooting 6-PPCs (I was not one of those) These were older rifles, a Sako & a Ruger. The guy shooting the Ruger mentioned that the chamber was tight enough that when using Lapua brass, he had to turn the necks just a bit. The Sako apparently had a lot of rounds down the barrel, but was still a pretty good rifle. FWIW, I was shooting an older Savage .223, but a good one, that will agg about .270 -- .300 at 100 yards. That's agg, as in five consecutive five shot groups, counting all the shots fired for record.

If you are going to BUY a rifle for shooting factory class, you should look around for a good used rifle that has proven itself capable. Or, buy a brand that you know there are a lot of take-off barrels available, & you know where to get them without paying much. A good barrel with a factory rifle is just a matter of odds, not brand, so knowing about a supply you can pick & choose from really increases those odds.

The whole point of the factory class, is to let people give benchrest a try without spending a whole lot of money. Shoot what you have, or be prepared to spend more than the cost of a real benchrest rifle.

* * *

If you're wondering why I shot factory class, it is because I'm waiting on cataract surgery. At this point, I can't see the X-dot on a 100 yard target, & so cant' shoot for Xs. I think the other BR shooter at Rockingham yesterday was letting his wife shoot the BR rig. The third guy, who won with his Ruger 6PPC, was an experienced shooter, but not a (yet) a BR shooter. Having said that, the factory scores were about what you would expect. Well down from the BR scores, though we did do pretty well against the "custom" rifles.

i just want to hunt deer... i just wanted to ask you guys which gun is better...

I used to see remingtons in benchrest, still see some on occasion, but I've never seen a browning in comp. so I'd say go with the remington. you can find a good used custon action that will be better suited for centerfire benchrest tho. JMO of course.

Does'nt matter which you chose

Each rifle has it's features that an individual prefers...For hunting either is sufficiently accurate, and the Browning has a removable magazine..and comes standard with a free floated barrel...The Remington is more readily modified by Gunsmiths...
My choice for hunting application only would be the Browning, I have owned many, and all were excellent...Just my 2 cents worth..

on the line

I believe he meant "on the line" at a registered group match. But we'll have one or two of those at Rockingham this summer, bring it on up & try it against the group guys -- just remember, no factory, no "modified" classes, just pure bench guns.
