Rem 700 Sako Extractor

I have a Rem 700 SA bolt that was originally a .308 bolt face that was modified to a .223 bolt face with Sako extractor installed.

Is it possible to return it back to .308 or PPC bolt face or do I need a new bolt?

I can live with that. Therefore has anyone got a used bolt they want to part with?
Is there a source for Canadians to obtain a used or new bolt?

700 Bolt

Nemo,
Have you tried to put a 308 case into the boltface. The only difference between a 223,308,and magnum when a Sako ext is installed is howw deep the cut is made into the boltface.I think that if try it you will find that it might work with a 223,PPc,or 308 case.

Good idea, I think I'm gonna chuck that bolt in the lathe, take out some of that ring and make it a PPC bolt. I see guys removing the ejector and leaving the hole, so how much difference would it make for a little extractor cut.

I've been told that it's the same Sako extractor for all 3 sizes. I'm new to this, but my first project will be a 7.62x39 Ackley hunting rifle.

700 Bolt

Nemo,
Sorry but you did not say that the bolt had ben bushed, but most bushings are glued in so you may not need to cut it out,but try to determine if it is glued or soldered, either way I would not cut it out but try to heat it and remove it.

Yea, it has been bushed. I'll take it out and put a new one in. What kind of adhesive is used for this other than silver solder?

A .308 bolt face and a Sako style extractor set to depth for a PPC is done quite frequently. The extractor is only set .014 - .015" deeper for a PPC than for a BR sized bolt face. You may have trouble getting an extractor set to depth for a .223 to work well with a PPC bolt face as the .223 extractor is set .036" deeper than for the PPC. You may have to bevel the top of the extractor some to make sure that the tip of the extractor will be forced out when you try to close the bolt on a PPC. You may also not have much of the extractor pivot pin inside the pivot hole in the bolt with the extractor pushed out to the side as much as it would need to be when a PPC head size is snapped into place.

Good points Mike. I'll examine the setup and if a new bushing cannot be setup to work correctly a new Kiff bolt will get ordered.
