Rem 700 Long Action to a magnum Action Question - help please

Hey guys, Happy New Year to all. My 2011 project is a 300wm or 300wsm build. I have a 31inch Lilja barrel, a stock, but the action is my concern.

I have a long action I took off a 30-06 a few years ago. Can a regular long action be used for a 300wm or 300wsm. I know it will have to be a single shot, but if the bolt face is changed out, are either or both of those calibers possible with that regular long action?

I would have a qualified gunsmith perform all the work if that is a question.

Thanks,

MLMC (Jim)

Yes,....open up the bolt face and change to a Sako style extractor...and it will work perfectly...

Good Luck..!

I would not recommend the partial conversion to the Sako style extractor.

Some facts you should know before you make a decision to alter a Remington "700s series" bolt with the partial installation of the Sako extractor system.

Originally the conversion was done to accommodate the PPC case on a 700 action... Why only part of the Sako extractor system was used I don't know. Perhaps the idea that the Sako "bolt guide" was actually a safety device escaped those who pioneered the conversion, or the fact that catastrophic case failures are rather rare.

The problem I have today with those conversions is very few of the owners know what they are getting into... perhaps many of those doing the conversion don't realize it either. I simply wish if you are thinking about having the conversion done you have the facts before hand.

The design of the Model 700 series action is superior to any other mass-produced bolt action ever made, and that by installing only part of the extractor system from a Sako (2 locking lug action) completely compromises that design. The alteration does not make it happen. But the alteration is completely unsafe when it happens. We are talking about a catastrophic case failure. They do not occur on a regular basis.

A Sako extractor is safe in a two lug Sako so why shouldn't it be safe in a two lug Remington? ... Because when people install the Sako extractor in a Remington they do not install the Sako bolt guide, which is the safety design incorporated in the Sako. That bolt guide is there to protect the shooter and anyone close to the shooter if a case fails drastically. I do not understand why anyone would knowingly install only part of the Sako system. If the Sako extractor and the Sako bolt guide were installed then the Remington would be as safe as a Sako. Not as strong and safe as the Remington was before alteration but safe.

Here is a picture of how well the Sako "bolt guide" deflected/prevented debris from exiting down the bolt raceway...

A Savage bolt head system can be installed on a 700 bolt.
This is way safer than the partial Sako extractor conversion.

By the time you pay to install the Sako extractor and correct the other problems in the factory bolt you could have a new over size PTG bolt installed with the extractor system of your choice, threaded bolt handle Tig welded and timed with a screw on knob. With some work either of your cartridge choices can feed from a magazine.

I forgot to say you can sell your old bolt for $100.00 or more, that would go a long ways toward paying for the new bolt.

Can I just have the bolt face replaced with the appropriate wsm of belted magnum one and not worry about the sako extractor?

The bolt face can be altered to the Remington style extractor. You have to find someone capable of doing it. It is not an easy machining job.

If it was my project I would buy a bolt with the magnum Remington style bolt face and sell the standard style bolt. Or sell the action and buy a magnum 700.

A little off topic, but Dennis, can you show-illustrate-discuss the difference between the Stock Rem and a stock Mil Mauser 98 ? Thanks from Newbie, but safe land.

A cartridge case is really nothing but a gasket to seal the pressures in the barrel while the bullet leaves the barrel. All gaskets need support or they will rupture. Brass will distort permanently at higher pressures than we are supposed to load for... if you can support this brass as the factory 700 does, within the 3 rings of steel as they once advertised, it makes the rifle very safe in the case of severe accidental pressures... the brass will expand everywhere it can but it can't really blow out as it would in other 2 lug actions... 2 lug bolt action does this as well as the 700. Not even close... this should be discussed in a new thread.
