Is the 541 action suitable as a base action for sporter class ? I realize it would need work ,other than just rebarreling it. I bought it used ,it shows hunting use and is "squirrel accurate"with Win T-22s.The action is smooth yet still tight, the trigger could be better (ALOT),or should I just clean it up Reblue it and use it as a squirrel getter ? Thoughts /Opinions

Although there are better custom actions to build a Sporter class rifle on, a 541 can be built into a decent Sporter. Back in the early 90's the 541-S was the rifle of choice in IR-50/50 but newer better actions made them less used. The trigger can be worked down to 6-8 ounces by a 541 specialist, Don Stith makes a good BR stock for them, and by adding a second action screw and a good bedding job they can be competitive. If you have one it may be worth doing but I wouldn't advise buying one to make a Sporter Class BR rifle anymore.

Roger,
I've been using a 541S, original stock, custom barrel, touched up trigger in IR50/50 Sporter Class this year. Since I spent all my play money on a custom 10.5, I couldn't put money into the 541.

It has served me well. I don't place the highest at the ranges I shoot at, but I am in the game and it let's me participate and have a great time.

Best,
Michael

Roger, while it sure is plausable you do want to ask yourself realisticly if you should base the project [if within your means] on something you can sell and preserve more of your investment if you either loose interest or move up. Believe me there are a bunch of guys that only think of that after the fact.

Turnover

Most of my firearms aren't what you'd call turnovers (Resold) I usually buy something that interests me, shoot it for awhile if it's not what I think it should be :( I'll redo it again :) in time. In this day and age you never have enough actions :D or projects. This would be sort of an entry level for me at BR Rimfire to see if I liked it without getting in to deep

Butch Hongisto made my sporter on a 541T action. It holds it's on with anything I have seen, and I even won a Target with it. If you could see what I see through a 6X Leupold, you would know it was all gun and not the shooter. As in any gun, an excellent action is required for a GOOD gunsmith to build on. I would hire someone that has been working on bench rest guns for a good while, and has his equipment show up regulary and perform well at the matches.

If you want to contact Butch, I can get you his information. You better start looking soon. The good smithys have a back log, and you might get your gun before next season starts.

The one thing I love on my Sporter is it shoots good with anything Eley or Lapua makes. It shoots in the 240 to 245 range in matches, and If I crank the scope up to 20 X, It easily shoot 245 plus. I honestly think it would shoot as well as my heavy rifle Butch made me. I'm going to stick a 40X scope on it this off season just to see.

Good luck
