Reforming Brass

Hey,would it be possible to reform 300 weatherby brass to 30-338 win.mag?

Yes, its possible. One pass in a FL 30/338 die and you have a piece of brass that can be trimmed about 0.320" to proper length.

But there are problems remaining to be addressed. Now most of the neck of your new case is what used to be shoulder and a couple thousands thicker than the last little bit neck. And the neck is probably too thick to be safe in a standard chamber. And if you expand and turn you'll still have a bump in the neck where the original shoulder and neck met. And once you turn, you're more likely to develop donuts in your cases.

A much better approach that avoids all of these issues is to just start with 338 or 7mag brass to make 30/338 cases

The Weatherby is a great cartridge in its own right. If you have a wad of brass and want to use it, build a Weatherby. If you have the 30/338 rifle (also a great cartridge) and don't want a Weatherby, sell the Weatherby brass and start with brass that will be much less work and produce better results.

Thanks for reply Greg,me and a friend were discussing this he built a win mag ackley with this brass and we was wondering about the 30-338.

I maybe wrong, but isn't a .308 Norma Mag pretty much the samething as a 30-.338?

Pretty much. The .308 Norma has both a SAMMI and CIP specification. AFAIK, the .30/338 does not, so you can't say "the same."

There have been a number of impressive 1K rifles in .308 Norma Mag -- IBS SOY Kerry Vinson, Leonard Baity, and Ray Loman all come to mind. Think Greg Culpepper has one, too (If it is the rifle I'm thinking of, Greg has some impressive wins with it, including some year-long aggregate wins.) I'm sure there are others. Probably all of those were built by Leonard, but it's an easy chambering.

Dave Tooley's equivalent is the .30 BooBoo, same capacity, but without a belt (made on the 8x68 case).

Another one is Joel Pendergraft's .300 JP, A .300 Ackley reamer run in short, using .308 Norma brass with the belt turned off.

All these are right at 88 grains water capacity full, about 4-5 grains less than the .300 Win Mag, and about 5-6 gains more than the .300 WSM.

Not a bad place to be, esp. without the belt. There are ways to deal with the belt, but none of them are much fun.

I'd echo Greg on the reforming. You can, but it is a PITA (an acronym, not bread).

Gary,

The Norma has a little longer body, neck and a little sharper shoulder than the 30/338. The Norma has about 11/2 gn more capacity than the 30/338 and about 3 gn less than a Win mag. Some manuals say that load data is interchangeable. I've been shooting the 308 Norma in my Remington actioned 1K light gun for about 7 years and like it just fine. If I wear out my 308 Norma brass I'll switch to the 30/338 to use a large inventory of Norma and RWS 7 mag brass I have on hand. If I were to start from scratch I'd pick the 300 WSM and use an action with a little bigger tenon than the Remington's 1 1/16".

I just saw Charles' post. Most of my LR BR and F Class rifles including the Norma LG are smithed by Mark King with the remainder by Mike McNiell, Mike Bryant and Mike Davis. I'm thrilled with all of them

Hi Greg,

On reflection, I imagine we're doing a slight disservice quoting case voulme . I've actually weighed the water in the cases, except for the WSM. But I fill to overflow, some guys use the neck/shoulder. Then too, the parent case has a lot to do with it, some have more capacity than others.

Moral is, with any load development, start safe and work up.

Charles,

I think anyone considering the nuances of 30/338 vs Norma 308 is likely to work up their load and not just plug in someone elses data but your reminder is well taken. On the issue of parent case variations, my Norma 7 mag cases weigh 217.5 gn and my RWS cases weigh 265.6 gn, a difference of more than 20%. If you shoot the same load in both cases you can tell which is which just from the difference in recoil. This an extreme example but amounts to about a 2 gn difference in capacity
