Recrowning Ruger SS barrel

I am attempting to recrown a Ruger M77 .223. It is throwing up a serious burr on both the lands and grooves. I am thinking it is the Ruger steel, as I am using the same tool (sharp !) and method that I always use with good results. Any ideas ??? Thanks, Rich

Check your tool and set up again maybe... I have not experienced Ruger barrels to be any different but I always 'finish' the crown with a piloted 60 degree cutter which leaves it burr free. Maybe you have a different barrel there...

Couple of questions-
1) what cutting tool are you using? insert, lipped HSS, etc.
2) are you facing in or out from the bore?

Thanks for your reply Dennis. I am using a sery small microcarbide boring bar that has a super sharp corner and am pulling it accross the face very slowly at 500 rpm. Depth of cut is .001. I've had excellent results with this method on both CM and 416 SS. I don't have the piloted 60 Degree cutter that you are using. Might have to get one !! Rich

Don't assume nothin' !!! I just got out the ten power magnifiers and looked at the tool edge. Guess what? I will put a new edge on it and try again. Thanks Jerry and Dennis. Hope Ruger doesn't sue me for Libel !!

You are using a boring bar to face a crown with? First, the overhang will shatter the edge on the carbide. Second, face from the bore out, and third, take more than 0.001" DOC. With 0.001" DOC and a corner radius of the tool of, say, 0.015" you are pushing in rather than cutting.

Sharpened the edge on the BORING BAR, cut a new crown across the face from the bore out, .001 depth of cut and GEE, what a beautiful Crown !! This tool has a razor sharp edge, No radius. More than one way to skin a cat. Nex time we look at the tool edge before cutting!
